Well to pull the HDD out you just need to remove the blue screw, then there will be two on each side that hold the HDD in its tray (when you go to pull it out of the PS3 you have to slide it right then pull out you will see a gap). Sizing I do not know though, I just used a small phillips and did not have a problem.

I had the same problem, the first time you try to take it out, it's really screwed it tight so you have to use some force and it'll eventually come loose.

I had no problems with the blue screw. The others were tricky but I ended up using a pair of pliers and that got the job done for me.

i recommend using pliers it will save you a major headache because i have the 60gb ps3 from launch all 4 screws got stripped, they were on there super tight and they were made of playdoh so they were super easy to strip. so i got a pair of pliers and they came out easy so i upgraded to a western digital 320gb. WD 3200bevt. hope that helps.

Push the screwdriver hard. Use a plier to turn the screwdriver. Make sure the plier has a ferm grip on the screwdriver. Turn the screwdriver with the plier gently.

Its just a small philips head screwdriver you need. If you cant find one, your better off using pliers. The blue screw is easy to strip, and you'll probably end up using them anyways.

I vote pliers as well. A pair of needlenose pointed at the blue screw should get it out. You'll need the pliers for the 4 cage screws too. The screws that were used are in super tight and are super soft. I've upgraded 3 times on my PS3 and even full well knowing the process I still managed to round out the screws in my brothers PS3 and I was being ridiculously careful using tools from my PC repair kit. Chew the OEM screws up and replace them with better ones.

I had the same problem. First, the blue screw. Make sure the PS3 is cooled down. Then, use a larger screw driver with a large grip handle. This will improve your grip (for more torque) and push really hard into screw (So you don't slip and strip the screw).

That is the easy part. The hard part is the four smaller screws the HDD is encased in.

For the smaller screws I left the HDD out for about 2 hours to cool even more. Then, it seems that only those small handle screw drivers would fit properly. The screw driver I'm talking about is those really small and thin metal ones with the revolving tops. The problem was that the screw driver is too small to grip with enough force to turn those super tight screws. My trick was to wrap the screw driver handle with loads of duct tape until it became thick enough to get a good grip. Remember to push REALLY hard while trying to turn the screw to reduce chance of stripping.

Now, if you DO strip the screws, you can buy a screw extractor from a hardware store. It's a screw driver with teeth that will dig into the screw giving you a firm grip.

I hope this helped. Enjoy the new HDD :)

Yeah man, just push super hard as you unscrew it with a nice pointy phillips head screwdriver, and wait til the machine is totally cooled down before trying

micro philips head is all that is needed. put some muscle into it. make sure the screw driver fits well. you don't want to strip any screws.

You just need a small phillips screwdriver head (one that fits those screws) and you remove the blue one and then the ones on the sides and switch it out with your new one and then put it back in the same way the old one was. Then when you start the PS3 up it'll have you reformatt the HDD and you're in business.

The screwdriver size needed is a #0 Phillips. Do yourself a favor and go buy a new one. Screwdrivers get bent and wear down over time. I bought small screwdriver kit for like $12 and the #0 Phillips fit perfectly but I had a #0 phillips at home that was too loose and definitely would have stripped the screw.

Edit: Oh, I also forgot, look for a screwdriver that's called "Electrician's Grade" or something like that. Most cheap screwdrivers are too hard for the types of soft screws used in electronics. The electrician's screwdrivers are made of a softer metal and are less likely to strip. I think 50% of all the problems with these screws is because people used the same old screwdriver that's been in the kitchen drawer for the past 10 years.
