My system says I have less than 500 MB left on my hard drive, but this is just not possible. All of my game data and saves total up to only about 14 GBs and I have only a small amount of music and no videos or demos on my system. Could my missing space be due to all the network updates I've downloaded? And if could I free up some space by reseting/formatting my HDD and downloading only the latest update?

ok have you looked at both the game data utility's, because thoughs files are sometimes like 5gb alone. what i do is go back and delete the games i dont play very much, but also you should be care-full not to delete any info that you paid for cause even though you can re dl it thats just way more time to wait to play the game agin.

For some reason, thats how they sale hdds. I recently purchased a 500Gb hdd. Only to find there was 475Gbs on it. Even worse. out of that 475Gbs total...I started off with 418Gigs/475Gigs. With completely nothing on my PS3...have no idea what was taking up the space.

Normally that extra space taken up is for the OS and other critical programs that you can't (and shouldn't) get rid of.

ps3 os partitions 15% of total memory from hdd for system updates and os info. i read it somewhere on the ps3 info packet that came with it.
