Who knows. I personally am hoping this is true because I just bought my 80gig PS3 two weeks ago and have a huge collection of ps2 games (I still have my ps2 though)
If it's true I'm sure it's coming along with that fugly ps3 slim.

Haha, yeah. Well, I have a feeling those pictures were fake. Apparently they've been floating around the web for months, so... let's not worry. Sony is smart enough not to release a system that looks like a dust pan.
On topic: If they would ever release PS2 titles on the PSN, the downloads would take forever! Imagine download sizes being at least 3GB?

I was just wondering about the PS2 titles on PSN. Like you said, it would take ages. Especially since it takes me about 10 minutes to download a demo. 30 if they're over 1000 mb. Dunno how bad my connection is (I'm using wireless though I could use wired from my dads room) but I never lag online at least ;D
Yeah I hope this is true too.....then I also hope the price cut in fall is true too, which would make it more of a system selling feature.i genuinly hope this is true.
it would make it a system selling feature. a great incentive to new buyers.

It's going to happen. I don't know if it will be in a few weeks or not, but it will come. Maybe with the launch of a special new PS3.. Furi-Kun: Well even with the price drop, its sitll not selling great, so instead of hoping for PS3 owners to buy a PS2, just let them play their games on the PS3.

Well, its the way i see it at least. I really hope it does come back. I do have a PS2... but PS2 doesnt look that good on my HDTV XD I want the PS3 to upscale the games like they used too
This seems to good to be true, but oh please God, I hope it is true.
Also, if this backwards compatibility is region lock then:

Oh, and if it is true, I won't update my PS3 anytime soon when the patch ACTUALLY comes out with the BC because something this big has to have some sort of problem like the software update that brick'd PS3's. Better safe then sorry.
the only problem with a BC software update is that what i think if thy make a emulator for the PS3 to play our PS2 games, wont hackers have a better hold on PS2 emulation?i hink if anything BC will be in a new PS3 model rather then a firmware update
lets go see.. The PS3 costs $400... The PS2 is sub $100.. I fail to see how a person who sees the PS3 is backwards compatiable would go buy that now when its 4 times more.. Alot of people are not buying the system because it plays PS2, they are buying it because its cheap and holds a vast library.. I don't see it having much effect on the said catagory, because most people who bought a PS3 usually already own a PS2.. Inless they got the system sepcifically for the blueray player..I don't think that will happen. I mean they gave the PS2 a price cut. What's the point of giving a price cut for the PS2 and then release an update to play PS2 games on the PS3? I could be wrong though...

Unless they're finally cutting support for the PS2, I doubt this is true. If they cut the price on the PS3 and it starts selling better, then they might cut PS2 support and add PS2 BC to all PS3s. But with the PS2 still running strong in sales, I doubt it, but we'll see.
However, a price cut plus PS2 BC for all PS3 might be just the thing the PS3 needs to gain groudn on the 360, so Sony might be planning to make a move for its current gen system. I can never accurately predict what Sony's planning, so it could go either way I guess. :P

WIth a price cut to $300, and added PS2 BC, I'm betting more people than you think would consider saving an extra $200 for a PS3 as opposed to settling for a PS2. It's near the end of Sony's 10 year plan anyway. The PS3 will really widen its install if Sony does this. However, Sony's recent PS2 price cut leads me to believe that Sony is going to continue support for the PS2 for another year or so.Personally, I bought my PS3 BECAUSE of the backwards compatibility... of course, this was in the dark days when the PS3's only good exclusive was Uncharted -- and Bioshock was a 360/PC exclusive, as was Fallout 3 DLC. Still, I imagine that I'm not the only one who wants the feature. And in the event my 60gb dies, I won't be out of luck in the future. At this point, I don't see BC as costing Sony substantially more than it makes them and I really do hope they consider adopting the feature once more... though risking a shipstorm from the owners of 80gb models in the process.
That being said, almost certainly not true.
Their timeframe is probably a load of BS, but I can easily believe this. It would be a very smart move by Sony, for many reasons.

I'll believe it when Sony gives the word

same here.
ill second that, but if it happens it'll be great....i can play ps2 classicsEveryone who is commenting on whether this is true or not is forgetting one important thing:
***WHO GIVES A CRAP IF THE PS3 IS BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE?!?!?!***
I have a 60GB PS3 and a 46 inch HDTV, and PS2 games look like ABSOLUTE CRAP.
Play your PS2 games on your PS2 with your regular CRT TV, the way they were supposed to be played.
Looks like someone left their PS2 smoothing option offEveryone who is commenting on whether this is true or not is forgetting one important thing:

Nope, smoothing is on, it still looks better on a CRT TV.

Well my PS2 games look better on my PS3 when played on my hdtvSomething tells me that if they decide to add full B/C in a firmware update, you can kiss a price drop goodbye.
That way Sony can market, "We keep on adding features to the PS3. It is a great value at the $399.99 price point..."

That's a theory, but at the same respect, people with a non-bc will be getting one heck of an update if they do pull off something like this! I already have BC, but know alot out their who were disappointed when they unboxed there unit, thinking it would play all thier classics from PS2.The emulator software will work strictly with the cell processor and its multiple cores. The architecture of this program will be greatly different than anything that will work on a regular PC. I imagine there's a way to do it since all games are designed on a PC, but I don't see how it would be easy. They'd be better off just getting a PS3. Or a PS2 for that matter.the only problem with a BC software update is that what i think if thy make a emulator for the PS3 to play our PS2 games, wont hackers have a better hold on PS2 emulation?i hink if anything BC will be in a new PS3 model rather then a firmware update
