With all this talk about sharing the InFamous demo and the Killzone 2 DLC, i heard someone say Game sharing is illegal. Is that true?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
it is not allowed by Sony either. they want everyone to buy their own. Game sharing is pretty much the same thing as pirating. I was told that if you were caught by sony Game Sharing, having a modified console, or glitching that your PSN will be permanently banned and your system will not be able to access PSN anymore, you will have to start completely over with a new system. That's what I heard, but I wouldn't trust someone else with my account and password anyways and if I did, the risks wouldn't be worth the few dollars saved.

I don't think it is illegal but it is kinda frowned upon by sony. They give you the five activation with the idea if your ps3 ever breaks you can redownload it without paying. The thing is that if it was completely utterly illegal they would not allow it to be done at all. Certain games put a limit in which you can't play the game at the same time on 2 consoles. Others don't really seem to care at all. But I think if you just randomly let your friends dl and they reach the 5 time maximum redownloads then you're screwed if your ps3 bricks.
It's not illegal on PS3. You get 5 downloads per game you purchase, except for full retail releases I believe like Warhawk. That is how Sony handles DRM on PS3. If you have multiple PS3's, upgrade your harddrive, or just want to let a friend have it. It's all fine. But you go over the download limit and you will have to pay for it again.
Thats a d@mn good point! What I really can't understand is the idiots who game share across the net. Who's to say if you give your info to some stranger that he's gonna give you the correct info? Who's to say he won't give it to all his buddies so they can rape your account for all its worth. I just wouldn't do that. Its crazy. And even though there's not a whole lot they can do besides sue you I'm pretty sure its still illegal. I guess they're just willing to take their chances.I don't think it is illegal but it is kinda frowned upon by sony. This guy knows what he's talking about! You don't buy a copy of the game when you buy on the PSN, you buy 5 licenses to play with. Sony might not approve of sharing, but I don't see how it's illegal. It's not illegal on PS3. You get 5 downloads per game you purchase, except for full retail releases I believe like Warhawk. Well I only share with my cousins or someone I really trust. Certain games like sfhdremix wont allow more than two people to play it at the same time. I haven't tried it with other games cause I think that is the only dl'able game I had with a lobby that allows more than two at a time.
I am under the impression a person can use downloaded content on up to 5 PS3's.. I mean all my downloaed data has been on three PS3's of my own now. And I downloaded the COD4 maps at my friends house on his PS3 under my name to play there too.. I hope I do not get reprimanded for that. :?

Guess its no big deal as long as you're being safe about it. It may not be completely illegal, but if it were ok to share games then piracy would not be illegal. I can download torrents of PC games all day long and never ever go to jail. However, I could get a big fat lawsuit slapped in my face. Because its against the law that protects private parties, they can take action against you. I really don't think Sony would ever bother, but Sony is not the only company with their hands in those games. Media Molecule might not like you giving four of your friends the KillZone costumes. You just cheated them out of twelve dollars! :( Either way, wether its illegal or not is still completely debatable (i guess) but there is always a chance that the consequences could come to bite you in the behind whenever they are good and ready. Just play safe, kiddos!! :)Can you provide a link to the info about sony? It's isn't that I don't believe you, I'd just like to read it.it is not allowed by Sony either. they want everyone to buy their own. Game sharing is pretty much the same thing as pirating. I'd love to know the definitive answer to the TC's question. Some people say it's illegal and others say it's legal. [QUOTE="Cody13_2012"]Can you provide a link to the info about sony? It's isn't that I don't believe you, I'd just like to read it. sony has never talked about it.. some people say it's in there in case your system dies. (but 5 times) others say it's there to share with family.. some people say sony did it on purpose, others say it was a mistake.. you could call sony and ask them yourself... me personally i could care less, i will do it anyways.. i have a close group of friends where we share disk games.. it's only natural to have one account we all buy stuff on, to keep the sharing going..it is not allowed by Sony either. they want everyone to buy their own. Game sharing is pretty much the same thing as pirating. ok well for example when my cuz was at my house, we brought thing on psn together, half/half, when he left and i got my own ps3 he gave me his account info so that i could download the same things that technically i paid half for, how is that illegal?
You could also go half and half on songs for his iPod, but that doesn't mean you can put it on your iPod once you get your own. There's no way to prove you put any money in on a digital purchase. Whoever's account it is linked to would be the rightful owner. If for some reason Sony wanted to take the two of you to court they'd most likely bring account information and what not with them. Your name won't be on the paperwork. You will be in trouble. But... That's not really ever likely to happen, so enjoy! I, personally, think it is a violation against the developers and the distributers (Sony) and I firnly believe there are actions that could be taken against you if they felt it was necessary. However, as long as they aren't doing anything about it.... ENJOY!ok well for example when my cuz was at my house, we brought thing on psn together, half/half, when he left and i got my own ps3 he gave me his account info so that i could download the same things that technically i paid half for, how is that illegal?

No, Sony allows you to share your account across a few PS3s, so oof course they have to let you share those games as well. However, I personally think it is stupid to share your account with anyone unless you absolutely know 110% they are trustworthy. I've heard stories from people who thought they could trust their friends and ended up getting billed for a bunch of games they bought using his account. Or from people who say they shared a bunch of their games with someone who barely bought any.
However, you also have to remember that you can only download PSN content a set number of times (5?). If you max out the game shares, and then your PS3 crashes on you...your going to literally have to rebuy every thing again if you want it. Because you won't be able to download it anymore.
No...it isn't illegal. But I don't think it's smart either. Especially for a couple $5 games? That's just my opinion.

a guy online told me about it while talking about glitches and other things that were banned by sony. I still don't know why you would give someone your password anyways.

Well, i have only traded with people from boards I usually post in, and I have only shared with a few people, but nothing bad has happended. I mean, I change my password before and after the trade, and I dont have any credit card info on the PS3, so there really is nothing for me to worry about.I don't think it is illegal but it is kinda frowned upon by sony. There are a lot of questions that reasonable people can disagree on, but this isn't one of them. It's nice to see that one person has read Sony's Terms of Service:
"...all content and software provided through PSN are licensed non-exclusively and revocably to you, your children and children for whom you are a legal guardian ..., solely for Your personal, private, non-transferable, non-commercial, limited use on a limited number of activated ... systems"
I've omitted some bits for brevity, but that's the gist. That's for the US PSN, but I'd bet it's substantially the same elsewhere.
This. 1 purchase for 5 activated ps3 systems. Me and my friends do it al the time. Saves us money. Its why PSN>XBLA. Sony made a great move in allowing it, unlike the competitors who ban your account....It's not illegal on PS3.

I guess you're right about that. But I guess it would also be illegal to create an account for another region to download a demo.
