Hi. A while back, my PS3 died. When I turn it on, I get a green light, followed by a click, an amber light, 3 beeps and a blinking red light. Ive thought about getting a Gamestop refurb for $229 + tax. But then I used Sony's online repair request tool, and it said it work only cost $150 (shipping included) to fix. I clicked "power" as a category and described my issue.

Would this be considered a "power" issue?

And if all is correct, what do you guys think I should do? Send it in or buy a refurb (Im of limited funds)?

Gamestop refurb will come with a total coverage warranty if you buy it. I believe it lasts for a year. So you can't go wrong with a buy from gamestop. Question is do you have that much time on your warranty with Sony?

Sounds like a disc is stuck in there or the disk tray is messed up. I've had a customer come into my store once with a problem similar, and I believe a game was stuck and wouldn't come out of the drive. I'd say geta slim over either of those options, if that is an option, otherwise, send it to sony. GSconsoles have a pretty terrible warranty.

Thats not true. The warranty costs anywhere from $20-$40, and it only covers certain issues. otherwise it comes with a 30 day warranty. If it fails after 31 days, you are screwed.

Umm no!! Actually when you buy a refurb PS3 from Gamestop, you get 30 days as an instore warrenty so that if it breaks within a month, you can simply take it back to the store for a full refund, another refurb or use the $229 plus tax towads a new Slim. After that 30 days, you get the same FULL 1 YEAR WARRENTY from Sony that anyone else gets!! Once it is sent back to Sony to be refurbished, it is restored to "like new" condition and the standard 1 year warrenty is put back into effect on the day of purchase!!

When my ps3 got the yellow light of death i looked for a private repair company online and found a few that specialize in console repair.

i would suggest that u check them out first and most offer a 90 day guarantee

Allow me to break up this argument. My worry is: How long will the Sony repair take and would I get charged any more money if I happened to select the wrong category? I just want to get back to playing games without spending every dime I have.

Sony's number is 1-800-345-SONY. I'd recommend calling them and asking them to help you assess the damage. It shouldn't make a difference if you misdiagnose what is wrong, since its not your fault. You aren't an engineer, or electronics expert. What you should be worried about is price changes, if you do diagnose it wrong they may charge you more, and they probably won't tell you if they can repair it for less.

The entire process will take 2-3 weeks. First they send the box (usually takes 2-3 days), then you send the ps3 to sony (took 3 days for them to receive my ps3), and as soon as they receive your ps3 they'll email you some message (they just sent me one today) that says they'll send your ps3 in the next 7-10 business days.

falconclan ur right man. i just started at gamestop the other day. after wat a year lol since jobs and hrs were cut down. anyways, ur right the refurb from gamestop is only 30days and that u have no type of warranty from the store or sony. the only time ud get free ONE year warranty from sony is on NEW ITEMS. but TC if u going to spend 230 plus tax u might as well get a brand new 120 slim for 299 plus tax. or if u think thats alot then go with the 150 if u send it in sony and u get 90days warranty with them

Alright, thx guys. I just got off the phone with technical support and they will be sending a coffin soon. Total cost: about $150. BTW, if anyone calls them, make sure to wish them luck :-).

Not really. Its got some perks, but for the most part the company pushes even the low employees too hard for what we are worth. If you don't get numbers (Reserves, edge card subscriptions) you'll be let go.

Oh wow, that would explain why some of the employees are so eager to get people to reserve games. Guess I'll look elsewhere lol.

Yeah, it helps us out, and in the sad state of our economy, we are literally fighting for our jobs.

Well, sending in my old one saved me $100. After buying a new monitor (20" of LCD awesomeness) I have $166 left (right now) for GAMES!! Maybe Ill see hats coming out and put a reserve on it. Now, Ill wait to see how my ebay auction of FIFA 09 goes.

Assuming it's not the SLIM you're having problems with I would invest in getting a SLIM. If that's kinda not on the table I would probably go with the cheaper way out and have Sony repair it since that looks like the cheapest route.
