So i was playing around with my Ps3 the other night and set up a media server which is really kool, to stream videos and stuff from my pc to my Ps3 now i have a question? what would the downside be to installing another operating system on my ps3 and using it as a home computer? like i don't get it, it is quite powerful and compared to a desktop pretty cheap, i don't really plan on doing this because i am building a new computer soon but i was just interested. Lets hear your opinions.

I can't say I'm a geek but what I can tell you is that from everything i've seen and heard it is alot of trouble and won't be nearly as functional as a desktop computer. Powerful yes but not designed to be used as a pc. I believe there are some videos on youtube showing some of the pros and cons..
i dont even know how to set up a media server on my ps3.....i just play games......but in order to get all of my 500 dollars worth i think you should teach me how to do so...
You're going to be fine, except its going to take up a lot of space that, if you're a frequent playstation store downloader or an avid gamer in general, you mite need later on.
My suggestion would be too install the new o.s. and then plug in an external hard-drive, or install everyhting on your other computer and access it through the network (if it's wireless, it should be at least a "g" router system IMO).
I was going to use my playstation 3, but then I learned of the wonders of wireless media transmission without the need of a media center p.c.!
I actually think that would be a great idea. I'd highly recommend upgrading your hard drive to something 160GB or above then get yourself a distro of linux to slap on that bad boy. I've not done it but with native keyboard and mouse support, the ability to install a printer, possibly use the PSeye as a webcam, play CDs, DVDS, BDs, install emulators AND play PS3 games, all @ 400 bucks...dude. Yes.
The downside? Well... the fact that you split your HDD in two... aaand that linux can take up some space on the split partition anyway? I don't know the downside but I'm not installing it on my 320GB HDD, even though.
