I'm going to be buying a PS3 in the very near future and am wondering if the console puts off much heat, and if so is the heat put out on the top (when lying down not vertical)?  I am just curious since I may have to re-arrange some electronics in my entertainment center.

i think i've only had a problem with overheating once...and it's probably because of where i have it stored here at school. i have a glass front tv cabnet and i usually keep the glass door open when playing but i forgot to open it up one time playing and i think that's when i had that only crash.

The playstation 3 does give off a lot of heat but it dissipates the heat pretty efficiently.  So the system doesn't get hot at all, just warm to the touch.  Since I play games and movies often on my ps3 I have my console in the vertical position.  This causes the heat to be removed more efficiently because there is greater surface area in the vertical position and heat always rises. Either way you will be surprised, by how sleek and quiet the playstation 3 is.

Thanks for the response.  Unfortunately I don't have the option to sit it vertical because of my set-up.  I think I figured out an option to move 2 pieces of electronic that are such a size I can place them vertical and make room for it.  It will be on glass so I plan on working out a solution to have it elevated off of the glass.

I keep my cabinet open.  If not the fan can get really loud to cool it down.  I choose not to have it vertical outside the cabinet I like the way it looks with my black hdtv and black wood tv stand behind the glass panels.

i got heat problem recently. I put my ps3 too just next to my amplifier where they both generated exchange hot air to each other after 2 hour of motorstorm session.  I moved them apart, no overheating anymore.

If you got about 10cm of space on all sides of the system with clear air flow, you'll be fine. I always have mine laying down and only the left side gets noticeably warm. Definitely not hot, just a bit warm, which is normal. The right side stays surprisingly cool. You'll notice the most heat when you put your hand next to the vents of course. Even then it's not too bad at all.

Really, the left side? Mine puts out it's heat on the right side, just underneath the internal disc drive, oh and I have it horizontal btw. I accidentally left it on all night (10pm - 9am about) and no problems at all. There is also a news story on this board that a group left a PS3 running Linux on for 1,440 hours straight and nothing went wrong! It wasn't to test and see if it would fail though, anyway, just read the post! :P

The ps3 blows out alot of warm air mostly from the back and top.   I left it on for 4 or 5 hours while watching some tv shows on it and it honestly was doubling as a heater for my bedroom.

Same here. The PS3 in vertical position takes air from the front ant blows it out the back and top.

It puts out some hot air but in all honesty its better than my 360 in the heat department. I am amazed it runs as cool as it does with an internal power brick. I run my vertically, the ps3 was made for it.

Yea like people have said the main vents when its horizontal and you're facing the front of the ps3 are in the back and on the right side, you can notice that there are large openings to allow the hot air to escape and be pushed out. The left side is where the HDD cover is and there are not vents, and there are smaller ones in the front. If you're thinking of putting it in a cabinet, make sure its not completely enclosed and that the back and right side have 4 inches (that's what is recommended by the manual) and you shouldnt have a problem...I haven't had any and mine is in a home entertainment shelf.

I've never noticed heat, but I have it next to my 360, which is very well ventilated, so it might. I just have never noticed it even really getting warm.

Nice.  My 360 doesn't run too hot, and I'm setting it on the same shelf of the entertainment center over a foot away from it, so looks like I'll be just fine.

I have both my launch 360 and PS3(Feb 07) horizontal with absolutely no problems with either of them. The only console I'll even think about having vertical is the Wii, so it'll look neat dividing the 360 and PS3 :D
