alright so heres the thing. im upgrading my hard drive from 40gb to 320, and i follow all the steps correctly and when u start my ps3 with the new hard drive, it just goes to a fkn screen that says this:

" The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the sysyem.

If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disc must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.42 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time. For more information on how to ovbtain update data, refer to the SCE web site for your region."

ok so thats what it says word for word. can ANYONE tell me what the FK this means?? and how to fix this.

You have a newer PS3.. Sony Support instructions.. http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1189

Worked like a charm on mine.. Enjoy.

Hey there, just replaced my hard drive and came across the same problem. No issue, chill my friend. Its all here or any other manual; check your model...

Page 15 or something...

http://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/CECHK02_03-2.30_1.pdf

However...

Go here...

http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/download/

download the latest update onto your PC, transfer to a USB Stick/CD or other form of compatible media

then put the stick in the PS3 eg USB port etc

And follow on screen instructions when restarting menu from memory... START AND SELECT together

Hope this helps. Good luck

K

If I recall correctly I got a message like that whenever I upgraded my HDD just the other weekend. I had to go to Sony's website and download the newest firmware update and put it inside my external hard drive. There are instructions on the site. Follow them and it should work.

Here's the link

You do not need to format the PS3 hard drive with a PC. It will do it all for you.

Here is the fix...

Simply download the latest firmware from Sony and put it on a memory stick or USB hard drive in a folder called UPDATE.

Then put the UPDATE folder in another folder called PS3. The names have to be in capitals (I believe the PS3 OS is similar to Linux and Unix in that it sees both upper and lower case as seperate characters).

THE PS3 FOLDER MUST BE ON THE DRIVES ROOT AND NOT IN ANY OTHER FOLDERS.

Pop the memory stick or USB hard drive in the PS3s USB port and press start and select as prompted. Follow the onscreen instructions and all will be well.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that the memory stick be formated as FAT32 (FAT16 may also work). The PS3 cannot read NTFS partitions.

This, and the red portion is something I read alot of people having trouble understanding. The PS3 will partition and format the drive for you, and it's better to let the PS3 handle it than Microsoft Windows (which without some 3rd party software wont format FAT 32 beyond 4 gigs anyway) LOL.
