I'm really in to games with online multiplayer. I like rpgs a lot too, but don't recommend oblivion or fallout cuz I have beaten both on xbox 360. I like a lot of different genres, although I'm not a big fan of racing games or fighting games such as street fighter.
RPG- import Demon Souls or buy Valkyria Chronicles... both are AAA
online game- hard to say... a lot of excellent games for the PS3 in this respect, but get MGS4.. that way you get an epic single player game along with, what I felt to be anyway, an enjoyable and unique online component with a lot of depth and great DLC support.. the downside being the Konami ID keffafle, but it's not too bad

MGS4 would be an excellent choice, but if you're into a good action-rpg Demon's Souls is the best this generation so far. It's so addicting and I've got 1 character in new game+ and one character in new game+++
The game is pretty difficult and is a really niche top game but it doesn't get better than that. You'd have to import it of course (get one of the two versions that feature ALL english) or you can just wait until it's released this fall in north america...which is why I originally posted MGS4.
I didn't think it was that great.... it had some epic moments and the online was good (dunno how it's doing now)....but was pretty much another ordinary alien invasion shooter.
I personally preferred the R2 campaign better than RFOM due to better graphics and bigger boss battles. It was a little short though. Go with R2 for the Co-op online as it is addictive and can be played with a friend on the same console also.
