here is the thing, I have wanted a PSP for a while now. I am heading off to college in the fall (woot!) and I think it would be handy to have a handheld (not that I am leaving my consoles behind, but it would probably be convenient) and while I certainly have the means to purchase the PSP, I am wondering if I really should. I mean, sure, its awesome looking, has great graphics, a nice screen so that I wont go blind by the time I'm thirty from squinting, but how much longer are they really going to keep this thing going?

Let's look at the evidence. Like it or not, the PSP games have been in a slump for a while now. Sure, you have games like Rockband Unplugged that are keeping it going, but only just barely, while the other handheld is going strong, with no evidence suggesting its going to stop any time soon. Furthermore, with the PSP "Go" releasing in the near future, I am getting the idea that Sony is crunched for money making merchandise in the handheld department. What really concerns me about the "Go" however, is the conversion to online games. Sure, they say that they are going to keep putting out all games on UMD as well as online DLs, but if they decide that UMDs are a money drain, then all of us with PSP 3000 would be screwed and forced to buy a "Go" (which I probably would only buy as a last resort).

So, in short, there are tons of games I want that are out NOW for the PSP (God of War, Rockband, Valhalla Knights to name a few) and of course I could put some games on my PSP via my PS3, which would be cool, but how much longer are they going to be releasing top notch games before they give up, and what about when they stop making UMD. In short, do you guys think that its still a good plan to buy a PSP 3000, despite the evidence suggesting its a bad move.

DO NOT RECOMMEND A BUY A PSP "GO"!!!!! IF YOU ARE GOING TO SKIP THE THREAD, AT LEAST DONT POST ABOUT THE PSP "GO"

sorry had to post that in all caps so that it would grab the attention of "post skippers"

Sony isn't discontinuing the 3000...The go is simply another alternative geared more for people on the go. So no it's not a bad idea to get a psp 3000 now if you don't care for the go's portability. The 3000 still download's, so if sony did stop making umd's you wouldn't be stuck with a useless piece of technology. No one here works for sony so we can't tell you when they'll "give up." I would say there are still 2 years before a new psp is announced, especially after the go's announcement. I've had a psp 1000 for 3 years now, I'm excited about getting a go, I'll be on campus for the majority of the time so it's portability will benefit me, plus free wi-fi is offered everywhere, so it benefits me.

He said do not recommend him a PSP GO in caps. And as hockey said, even if they stop UMDs you can still download with the PSP 3000.

I recommend PSP3000 or PSP Brite. But if you want, you can also go for the PSP 2000, there's no big differences between the two except for the brighter screen and the mic.

Do more research man, really. The 3000 isn't going anywhere and the release list for the system is bigger than it has ever been. Devkit prices are down and third party support is going up. The UMD isn't disappearing and nobody is giving up on the PSP. (At the very least read a press release)

The GO is a fourth launch. 3000's will be sold side by side with it. Want a PSP? Buy it. Don't? Then don't. Simple as that.

Yeah...I mean how many threads say UMDs not Ditched and did you not see E3. They had a giant psp on screen showing many games coming out for the psp.

I really don't know what's the big deal about "BRIGHTER" screen? I have a PSP-2000 and I always use the lowest brightness to save battery and I'm fine. You just get used to it.

Oh you said brite and 2000 so I was confused plus I never heard the name brite. Thanks. Now I know a new name besides Slim PSP and 2000.
