Since the older models produce more heat due to their larger core chips...you should use a low-power vaccum to suck all the dust out regularly just to prevent it from overheat.
The problems could have been some bad codeing in a game. I have had this happen a good bit but that is the only problem I have had in over two years with my PS3.Forgot to add that I had it for a bit over a year now. No problems so far. Well a few but minor and they all "fixed themselves" O.o (dunno how)

You can clean the grill by using a small handheld vaccume. I wouldn't recommend using canned air.
