If you don't already have a 360, I'm going to suggest games for all around playability. Keep in mind, these are not my personal favorites, just games to pick from if you are an all around gamer.
1. LittleBigPlanet: It has great single player, online, co-op, and is absolutley perfect for all ages and for casual and hardcore gamers.
2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: A compelling narrative, amazing stealth action shooter gameplay, a stellar online and lots of replay value make this my personal favorite. No trophies, and more geared towards hardcore players, but it is more casual than the other MGS games.
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: A good primer for the upcoming MW2, the campaign is amazing and online is the best you will ever play. No trophies, and lacks co-op modes, but it has acompetitive splitscreen (4 player). World at War (the newest CoD game) is the same thing but in WWII, a bit harder, less stelar campaign )in my opinion)and with trophies and excellent co-op modes (especially the zombie mode). Keep this in mind when choosing between the two.
4. Killzone 2: One of this generations finest titles, it perfects some of the best features of FPS gameplay andintroduces a first person cover system. Its best described as a combination of Gears of War, Halo, and Call of Duty. It has a very addictive multiplayer (especially witha clan) and single player isn't bad either, although if you have played the first Killzone the missing features are disappointing. Still, this game has some of the best graphics you are likely to see.
5. The Orange Box: Five games, one box, what more needs to be said? A great set of single player games with the cartoony fun of Team Fortress 2, PS3 isn't the best console to play it on especially with the lack of support from Valve, no DLC, and no trophies. Still, its aroung $30 or so and is a great value.
