If I want to get surround sound for my PS3, should I connect it to the receiver using an optical audio cable?

yup! but if optical is all you can do its definitely better than the standard red/white :| Especially considering that just using red and white wont give you surround sound even if you have a surround sound system. So by all means, just use anything BUT the standard colors.

From my own dealings you won't get true HD sound from a bluray with optical. I had to buy a new receiver that had HDMI to get it.

Not really correct with that statement. You won't get 5.1 or 7.1 surround with the red/white cables, you will get 2.0 Pro-Logic surround sound with the red/white which of course is far more inferior to digital, but it's still suround sound.
