I'm wondering which game I should buy. I really enjoyed the past two GH games on my PS2, but now that Harmonix left I think I should get Rock Band. But then again, 30 songs is a really small soundtrack, and even though there downloadable tracks, I don't wanna feel like I bought half of a game (for $170 too). Also, my friends don't come buy too often due to the fact that my basement's getting remodeled and its kinda cramped in there. :P
I also heard that GH3's online was TERRIBLE. Like you couldn't even connect to a single game.

So what should I get, guys?

Its all a matter of personal preference. If all you care about is the guitar parts, GHIII is probably the better bet. The GHIII tracks are more challenging. However, if you like the idea of the drums or singing, Rock Band has more bang for the buck (if you can get past the easier guitar parts). You can always do the Band Wold Tour part of Rock Band solo and have friends jump in when around. I haven't played either online, so I can't comment on that, but I have both and both are awesome in different ways. So, no one can really tell you which one would be best for you. Sometimes, we just have to make decisions for ourselves :)

From what you said, GH3 will cater to your needs more than Rock Band could. GH3 has a large and awesome soundtrack, online does suck, but it will get better.

Based on reviews alone, Rock Band is the better game.

GH3 84% on Gamerankings
Rock Band 92% on Gamerankings

It seems that GH3 may work out better for you though if you don't have enough people around you. I've heard mixed things overall with GH3.

I have both and prefer Rock Band. Guitar Hero III was made by Neversoft and it shows. It's less about the music now and more about pressing buttons as fast as you can so you can show off on youtube. Rock Band brings me back to my high school / college days when I played bass and drums in local bands.

Just watch the rock band video review, it says its really fun when you play with 4 people, but not fun with only 1 person so buy it if you have other people to play with

get guitar hero!!! Rock Band took 6 of there songs from Guitar hero 3, and plus GH is just way more awsome (yes i know thats barely a sentance) especially if you like riff-a-licious licks, and mind blowingly bad455 guitar solos!

According to the review, RB has 58, and not 30 as you said, songs. On top of that, the downloadable songs are a better deal than the GH3 songs, and when you download them, they immediately make their way into your Band World Tour's rotation. I remember when they reviewed GH3, they said it sometimes gets some frame issues. They said RB has none. Ever. Now, of course frame issues are bad, but I don't think they are normally game breaking. But in the case of a rhythm game, if you are acutally playing with the rhythm, and not just relying solely on hand-eye coordination with the notes, any slowdown would be unforgivable, as it would completly throw your rhythm off. I haven't played GH3, so I don't know if it's really an issue, but it's something to think about.

After playing Guitar Hero 2, I thought Guitar Hero 3 would be great. I went out the first day to buy it and couldn't have been more excited to play it. However, the game did not feel the same as GH2 felt. The notes were not synced properly with the music, messing up your rhythm and worse - your multiplier. The calibration option helps lag the notes in beat to the music, but it is still not rock-solid like GH2 was. Because the online is split-screen, there is little noticeable lag and it plays exactly like GH2 did. However, the quick match option never works. I read on the guitarhero.com forums that it's a problem, and the solution is to host your own matches. Not like this option works either. There's probably 5 out of 24 hours in a day where their online servers are active. The other hours you're spent waiting in your game hoping somebody that can't join your game will. "Failed to connect" is the common symptom. I recently put my bundle on eBay, and having already beaten the game on Expert, I was satisfied with the 17 dollars I ended up spending on it. (eBay for 90, bought for 107) From my experience, I would not recommend Guitar Hero 3 mainly due to the inability to play online. The hdtv lag is nerve-wrecking, but it won't cause you to fail a song. After reading excellent reviews for Rock Band there's no doubt in my mind that it's superior. Even if you're only playing the drums.

Depends, Guitar hero is good for solo gameplay.

Rock band is worth it if you have friends to play it with.
