They stated it would never play PS2 games, and I have heard the rumor about an update also. Until there is an official announcement from Sony, just assume it wont ever play them because nobody else knows, and there are always rumors floating around and most of them are never true.

Sony never announced there would be future BC for the 40Gb. But it's technically possible and they would surely recoup the development cost with selling downloadable games like God of war ... What I don't understand (and don't like) is that they said that the 60Gb European PS3 worked on "software" emulation and now it won't work with the 40Gb

I'm not trying to rag on you or anything, but if BC is something that is important to you, you should have done some research (specifically with official Sony info) about the different models. People on here will tell you all day "facts" that they have read or heard, but in the end, Sony has the final word. They have never said anything about 40GB BC. This doesn't mean it won't come, but like a previous poster said, listening to rumors will only lead to confusion and misinformation.

It was in an interview some time back that Eric Lempel (the Director of PlayStation Network Operations) did say it would be possible (via a firmware update) to let the PS3 play downloadable PS2 games, much like the system does now for PSOne games from the PlayStation Store. He did not say they were actually going to do it, however. Wil it happen? If demand is strong enough, most likely. Maybe we will see something announced during E3 next month- there hasn't been much more said officially as of yet, however, so take that last bit as just speculation on my part.

The European 60GB models are just like the US 80GB: it removed the Emotion Engine chip (PS2 CPU), but retained the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU). Thus the software emulation in those models are only emulating the CPU processes while still utilizing the actual GPU hardware. The 40GB model has neither of the chips, thus software emulation would have to be redone to replicate both the CPU and GPU. This is costly (in both time and resources).

I guess if they emulate the PS2 Emotion Engine it could work, but the 60 gig already has the actual hardware, I think.

Although i have heard this rumour before, i do not believe this will happen in the near future. The development costs just wouldn't be worth it, unless there was heavy demand for BC on the 40GB consoles. However if the higher end models were to be slowly phased out, im sure BC would become 100% software emulated. The problem with emulation is that the architecture between the RSX gpu in the PS3 and the Graphics Synthesizer in the PS2 is completely different. But who knows, if they pull this off it will really show everyone the power of the cell as a CPU and a GPU for a completely different architecture being emulated.

This goes out to everyone, do extensive research before making a purchase, especially if the product you are buying is worth alot of money. To stay safe try to get information directly from Sony rather than listening to rumours floating around on forums throughout the Internet.

Enjoy your new PS3

exactly. just because joe shmoe from the forum says something doesn't mean it's true.
