I plug my ethernet cable into the back of my PS3 and plug the other part in the back of my modem, once thats all done i go to 'connection test' and it says its failed what am i doing wrong.
Sometimes you need to reset your modem by "power cycling." Unpolug the power from the modem and let it sit for 20 seconds, plug power back in and try. Also, make sure to use all of the "auto" settings when setting it up. That's my first suggestion.
your network has to be set up and running before you attatch your ps3. its not as simple as unplugging your computer and then plugging in your modem. try this: make sure you can get online with your pc through your high speed modem, then attatch either a router or an ethernet switch to the modem and plug up your cpu and your ps3 to the switch or router. that should do the trick

yes you can i do it all the time. i unplug the pc and modem by switching the switch board off. if you have cable right pay a attenchen plug it to the ps 3 call the cable commpany then they will make it run then you will be able to do what i do uptop.

complete bull, i went 4 years without a router.

all he needs to do is configure the connection so its "Wired" rather than "Wireless" or simply just go through the config process to make sure everything checks out. just testing the connection won't do anything if its configured wrong

Edit: actually it could be the mac address isn't registered with yout ISP, give your provider a call and tell them that, then go to your PS3 settings and it'll say the mac address. if u were behind a router the router's max address would be registered already and your isp wouldn't see it. anyway try that, its usually the problemÂ
no you don't i do it all the time don't waste your mmoney unless you want to. call the cable company then they will do something that will read the both of them then just unplug modem every time you switch it will work.

telling your isp you're hooking up a different "computer"=like device with a mac address is CHEAPER, so go with that...........................................
