Mine lasted best of a month before it died again.Dan_LeroThat's not very good at all, but like you said, a different problem came up so hopefully I'll have a bit more luck. I've read this fix can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to... well I don't know what the high end would be. It may be on borrowed time at this point, but that's why I plan to backup everything, just in case. I should have been doing that anyway. Thanks for reaffirming my choice of Arctic Silver.
You mean which light is it? It's the small rectangular light on top, the same one that's red during standby and blue when the system's on. If you just got it a few months ago you should be good for quite a while (assuming it's new). I've had this one for years and aside from the occasional freeze I haven't had any problems. I don't know GSpot's policy on linking to other sites, but here's a YouTube link, you can see for yourself - /watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GUHey, I don't mean to thread hi-jack or anything, but where exactly does the YLOD show up at? I recently got a PS3 a few months ago, and I'm just wondering where it would show up at.

I just got YLoD today and I decided not to bother fixing it for this exact reason. At least if I get a Slim I know it'll work without constant maintenance. In saying this, good luck dude. I hope it all works out well for you.

The way I see it, I might as well give it a shot and try to fix it myself for $40 instead of buying a whole new unit, and I get the satisfaction (and aggravation) of fixing it myself. Plus I don't want to lose all my saves! But wait, can you just transport the HDD from one system to another? Great sig btw. In Tyler We Trust.
I recently had yellow light of death too, this was my fifth replacement so i decide enough was enough and im going for the slim this weekend.
sorry to hear about your loss though tc :(

And I've read that each PS3 HDD is coded for each particular system, so I believe it needs to be reformatted before you can use it in another PS3, which would wipe all my stuff. Lol, its a lose lose situation.
Best choice of action is to get a new ps3, a refurbished ps3 is not worth it, seeing how it breaks within months.
http://www.pcquikfix.com/playstation3-repair/ For repair, it's cheaper than sending it to Sony but still has a chance of breaking down again in the future. I got ylod, got it repaired from this place and it worked for awhile and then it broke down again on monday but they fixed it again for free because it was within 30 day warranty period. I am likely going to buy a slim when I get my tax return, transfer the data, and then sell my 60 gb.
If you've bought a slim, then you might never get this problem anyhows.Seems like most Fat 60Gb expire just on or around 2 years old.Hey, I don't mean to thread hi-jack or anything, but where exactly does the YLOD show up at? no-one knows, seriously, not even SONY.hey, i wanna know why does the YLOD occur?
is it over heating or hardware problem?
salil_707
I hope it doesn't happen to you, bam! Just to be on the safe side, you should be in the habit of backing up your saves regularly. I know I will from now on. I should've learned my lesson when a Borderlands glitch corrupted my lvl 50 soldier (so many awesome guns - gone), but I all I did was start backing up my Borderlands saves. I was looking forward to playing Heavy Rain, too."Knock on wood" Ive had m 60gb ps3 for atleast 4years or close to it, I kow the ylod is coming lol, just hope it comes after im done with Gow3 and ff13, I think im near the end of heavyrain..

From what I've read most YLODs are caused by overheating or just normal wear-and-tear. The solder connecting the CPU or GPU comes loose but can be reconnected by heating up that area with a heat gun. Some YLODs are caused by some sort of problem with the power supply. I think there might be another suspected reason, but it's at least those two. There's no single definitive reason for all YLODs though, so I don't even know if the fix I'm going to try will work. Just ordered the Arctic Silver thermal compound - almost ready to begin the operation.hey, i wanna know why does the YLOD occur?

Is that you with james hetfield? :-OYeah the best compound to use is the Artic Silver, i fixed my PS3 twice before and used that. But on the 2nd attempt some other issue came about (must have been from when i took it apart) and i couldn't fix it so i just went out and bought a Slim.
