You have to call Sony to send it in. If it's out of warrenty, you have to pay $150 US or $169 CAN. They'll replace it.

Sounds like it may be time to call Sony and see what they think. How long have you owned your PS3? And somewhat off topic, what's up with your comment about GUFU?

Sorry to hear that, you'll have to call Sony. We literally get at least 1 YLOD topic a day these days, makes me wonder just how serious the problem is in comparison to a certain other well-known hardware failure.

What do people do to there consoles these days? Had mine since 3 months before the UK release and been playing it a lot more than what probably an average gamer plays, yet mine hasn't even froze let alone the YLOD. I haven't even cleaned mine AND it's under a desk, in possibly the most confined place. Maybe I'm just lucky.

This is not crap. This is a serious problem. My 60 gig also recieved the yellow light. From my understanding it is some sort of HDD malfunction. It is said that only 3% of PS3 fail per year. I'm starting to belive this percentage is rising with the numerous accounts of YLD. If this problem is caused by the devil's firmware (2.40) then this sucks big time.

All I know is "YLOD" is very real as I've had it myself. It cost me $190 I barely had (and it was around Christmas to boot) I come here almost daily and those that are familiar with me, know I don't BS (well they should) and don't go on about this system vs system crap. PS3 was the first system I've ever owned to crap out on me. Not to mention, I took care of the bloody thing. You can't really deny this isn't happening and it all seems to be around the same life span. One year min.

When I called Sony tech support about it all they could tell me was that it was an overheating issue. I know for a fact that it is not. I barely play my ps3. It is completely strange that many of the PS3's are crapping out during the same time period. I had a friend whose 60 gig also recieved the YLOD about 2 weeks ago. Are there any accounts of YLOD on other GB models?

While I'm sure some reports of YLOD are fabricated, some of the reports of this problem are coming from long time supporters of Sony.

Whatever, you're one of the biggest Sony bashers on here. :P Kidding of course. I wonder why so many PS3's are dying at the same time. My 40gb version got loud (the fans would blow really hard) after playing a game for around 30 mins. I dusted around my ps3, blew out a little dust with compressed air, and it's been working fine ever since. *knocks on wood* I'm wondering if it's the older models because of age/more use or if it's because they used the 90nm chip instead of the 65nm chip like Sony started using when they released the 40gb.

thats what i thought too.. that like somehow the newer firmware updates added to much and older 90nm chips couldn't handle it or something.. Does anyone know what firmware it was that the YLODs started showing up?

Where did I say "TC, you're lying"? Please tell me because I don't see it. If I was targeting him...BELIEVE ME....I would state I was talking to him. Ask anyone here if I hold back punches, so once again it was a general statement & if you can't see that or don't plan on turning these threads into a battle royal...then just drop it already. There is truely no need to even respond back because you & I are on two different pages right now.

I never suggested you called him a liar, I simply stated what I intepreted from your post. And I'm hardly trying to turn this thread into a "battle royale". I responded to you politely both times and honestly I'm a little confused to how you're reacting to my previous posts. Relax man, it's the internetz. If you can't have a discussion with someone without becoming upset/frustrated then I'm unsure what to tell you.

I think he was just pointing out that your first post was a little ambiguous, and could be interepreted either way. That's what I got out of it anyway.

Yeah it's probably Microsoft spending the Time to Tarnish the Reputation of the Competition instead of fixing theirs... Not saying the YLOD isn't real, perhaps it is, and if it's 3% of only early models then that is a heck of a lot better than the 33-50% of 360's that get the RROD. I know 10 people including myself with 360s and I only know 1 who hasn't got the RROD (he just bought his 1 month ago despite my warnings)

its getting more common cause more ppl have ps3's. I of the reasons my be if there is no enough space at the back for it to breath. One of my friends got the YLOD cause the console was an inch away from the wall

How many times does the math have to be done... 1,000,000 units x 1% = 10,000 manufactured defective units 1,000,000 units x 3% = 30,000 manufactured defective units 1,000,000 units x 5% = 50,000 manufactured defective units 5% is the tail end of the industry accepted manufacture defect rate. Months ago the speculated Sony PS3 sales were around the 17mil mark... 17,000,000 units x 1% = 170,000 manufactured defective units 17,000,000 units x 3% = 510,000 manufactured defective units 17,000,000 units x 5% = 850,000 manufactured defective units

I agree. I think Sony is still well under the industry norm for defective units, it's just surprising to hear about a lot of consoles failing, especially after how reliable they are.

It's the squeaky wheel effect. If every single PS3 owner was required to register on GS and post once daily you'd never see these posts.

Ouch. Most likely you have a launch PS3, like the 60 or 20 gb, and those launch skus are more prone to problems and will have problems sooner or later no matter how good you treat your system. If you're not under warranty, get $150 ready for the fix. I believe the entire repair process will take at least 2 weeks. Good luck.

Well I know not all are due to HD failures but I do believe the majority are. I remember reading an article where a rep from SONY urged everyone to upgrade the HD and also to do backups, they dont last forever.

It's a youtube video that sheds some light on the topic. If what is being said is true then do we have to get this stupid part replaced every 2 years or so? This is complete BS. I don't look forward to spending $150 on my 60 gig every time this particular part goes bad. What are your thoughts of the video?

It sux because since it's not happening to people all at once, so it's not getting noticed that much and Sony aren't pressured to give out free warranties. This is one reason I don't buy consoles at launch or launch consoles.

[QUOTE="Kruegmeister"][QUOTE="MusashiSensi"]If everyone who quoted me actually read my comment carefully, they would see that I did NOT state his was crap, but the constant YLOD threads ARE shaping up to be crap. MusashiSensi
Yeah it's probably Microsoft spending the Time to Tarnish the Reputation of the Competition instead of fixing theirs... Not saying the YLOD isn't real, perhaps it is, and if it's 3% of only early models then that is a heck of a lot better than the 33-50% of 360's that get the RROD.I know 10 people including myself with 360s and I only know 1 who hasn't got the RROD (he just bought his 1 month ago despite my warnings)

Lol. I just hope mines never goes this route. I have had mines since day 1 & I love this baby. :)

I know what you mean, I've had mine since August 2007. Today though for some reason it didn't want to read my discs, no idea how that happened, now it seems to be working fine, but I'll be extra cautious to not let it get to dusty and not leave it on for unnecessary amounts of time.

I don't know if you guys read my topic last week, but my (60GB) shut down on me "Twice". I thank god I didn't get the Yellow light when I tried playing it again like an idiot. I did get the red blinking light, but I just cleaned her up a bit and gave her the day off...

I just think the blinking red light means (Over Heating). Been riding her with demos and playing Fear about 5 or 6 hours a day and she's been working like a champ.

Sorry for your lose man and good luck with whatever you do.

My 60gb quit reading disc's period. It seems to me like the 60's are dying to easy all of a sudden. I sent mine in, and I'm waiting to see if I get stuck with a crappy 80gb in 2 weeks :( And yes I took care of it, after spending almost 700 on something, I wasn't about to treat it like crap.

How do you go about doing a full system backup? That sounds like a good idea. :)

17,000,000 units x 1% = 170,000 manufactured defective units 17,000,000 units x 3% = 510,000 manufactured defective units 17,000,000 units x 5% = 850,000 manufactured defective unitsemitsu97

This is perfect. But sometimes people do BS with YLOD just to hate on PS3, but with more purchases of PS3s you're going to get more people having problems it's normal.
