Do people who don't have HDTV's (like me) not get very good graphics on the PS3 because their tv doesn't support the resolution?

It looks better on HDTVs but it still looks great on SDTVs.

The difference is very noticable, if you are playing at 480i and then go to 720p or 1080i you will be shocked. But still, the graphics are great either way but HD is needed to get the full graphical capabilities of most of the games.

It looks WAY better on an HDTV.  Standard Def still looks leaps and bounds better then PS2, but you just don't get the full effect unless it's on HDTV.

You may find yourself squinting a bit on an SDTV if the devs @#$%ed up and didn't consider SDTV's during development.

*cough* Capcom *cough*

The merit of the graphics does not change either on HD or SD but HD clarifies things so the games really do look like next gen games. The higher end games like Motorstorm and GTHD really benefit from HD. SD still looks great but after going to HD you will want ot make that jump.

Obviously the graffics are better on a HDTV.  That is all that I have ever played since I have had my PS3.  That being said, my brother just got his PS3 and I went over to his house to hang out.  He has seen mine being played (on a 21 inch Sony HDTV monitor).  He has a standard 37 inch (I think) Sony Triniton which is nice but an older model.  I was pleasantly suprised how good Marvel looked on his TV.  I honestly didnt think it would be comparable (and technicaly its not) but the picture was VERY nice.  You also have to remember that not all games are in 1080 but rather in 720.  If I were to play one of the higher end games such as the GT demo there is a TOTAL difference but with a game like RFOM there isnt that much of a change.  My picture had better clarity and lighting but his was good too.  I would say you are fine until you get a chance to upgrade TV's.  It is a HUGE difference over a PS2

Why are there two of these  threads within a page of each other.  Yes, you essentially need an HDTV to really utilize the ps3.  It is a blu-ray player afterall.  Just stop being cheap and save up until you can afford to take full advantage of all the ps3 has to offer. The gameplay in SD is extremely poor in comparison to the gameplay in HD.

Don't listen anyone above.

HDTV just makes things show look more colorful and sharper. but seriously, the games itself look next-gen ether way on ether tv.

HD has nothing to do with color but pure resolution.  SD is for ps2 and xbox... there is no excuse to be playing ps3 on a sd tv.  Use a monitor, or you should have saved up and bought a tv before the system.  Any SD setup is going to be a sad use of the ps3's power.

SD tv is fine, you will still get the next gen visual but at the fullest. Of course there's no comparison to HD.

It varries form game to game.  For example, resistance looks good on any tv it plays on with only marginal diffrence from tv to tv (i prefer widescreen though), but need for speed carbon looks like a slightly shinyer ps2 game on an sdtv, and looks really good in 720p.

detail stands out alot more on a HD display. for exsample when i first poped in Gears of War for the 360  i could notice evry little detail on the armor of Marcus, when i poped in Motorstorm i could see evry spec of dust hitting my car/bike. it really brings the details out. and trust me all the small details your missing out on a SD TV add up to the BIG picture on a HD.

Sure but if youve only got $1500 to spend do you get the tv now and the ps3 in a years time? (meaning you really gain nothing for a year, except for some slightly better looking dvd's and some occasionally HD broadcasts)

or the ps3 now and enjoy it and the new tv in a years time?

Easily get the tv.  Is that honestly even a question?  HDTV is the standard, it is no longer the minority.

Though I respect your opinion Browe, because I know that you are very knowledgable when it comes to HDTVs. But I do think that it is fair for one to buy a PS3 first and HDTV second. SDTVs are still in the majority, though if I recalled correctly, companies have stopped making them. As HDTVs start to become more mainstream, prices will drop. And that is when most people are going to start buying. Pricedrops of HDTVs are much more frequent then say, waiting for the PS3 to have its first pricedrop.

the PS3 is only $600 and the price isn't going down any time soon, and if it does, it won't go down by much.  If all you have is an SDTV get the PS3 now and save up for the HDTV.  Every year HDTV's drop in price, and the technology gets better.  Thats better advise than saying don't get a PS3 until you get an HDTV.  You can still play games and do everything else that you can do on an HDTV with a normal SDTV, just with a lesser picture.  Its not like the picture on a SDTV is so horrible you can even play games on it. Grow up guys! Stop given REALLY REALLY BAD advise.

I believe that the number of houses with an hdtv is somewhere around 45%.  That is a lot higher percentage than the percentage of homes with a ps3.
