This is a very simple guide that will teach you how to Install Ubuntu linux on the PS3 and to get more out of your powerful system :D.

Getting Started

Firstly, Download the Official PS3 Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon ISOfile and burn it to CD (It is recommended you use a download manager).

NOTE: You will have to manually setup the partitions during the setup, else the entire system will lock up during the setup wizard. When manually setting up the partitions, select 10GB for the main partition and setup the rest to be used for the swap area (i.e. filesystem type SWAP). You may well find that the Other OS partition (which appears as sda in the installer) has no partition table, in which case you will need to let the installer create one. This is fine and doesn't overwrite the real partition table on the PS3 disk (sda is a virtual disk created by the PS3 for Other OSes)

Prepare the PlayStation 3

WARNING: These next operations WILL ERASE EVERYTHING on your PlayStation 3. Be sure to back up the data that you want to restore later once you've formatted the PlayStation 3 hard drive (i.e. your game save data, configuration data, etc.).

At this point you will have a complete desktop session of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Edubuntu running off the CD on your PlayStation 3. From here you may choose to do a hard drive installation. Just double-click on the"Install" icon and a wizard will guide you through the setup process.

Booting Back to the XMB

To boot back into the PlayStation 3 XMB, you must be at the kboot prompt. At the prompt, type "boot-game-os".

e.g. kboot: boot-game-os

An alternative in case the above doesn't work is to turn off the PlayStation 3. Then hold down the power button on the PS3 until the PS3 beeps twice. The PS3 will boot into the XMB and prompt you to choose the default video setting.

Playing Blu-Ray Films

It should be possible to play Blu Ray film under Linux in a manner similar to HD DVD (which shares the same ineffective DRM restrictions). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD Bluray and HD DVD.

And Thats All Folks!!! Enjoy :P

I tried ubuntu and it was ok I uninstalled it and installed yellow dog, and I like the overall look and functionallity better, but for some reason runs much better than ubuntu and works well with my tv at 720p I had the hardest time trying to get ubuntu to work past 480p and had to settle for 576p which sucked. So in my opinion yellow dog is overall much better.

Thats true, only try installing this if you have experience with installing operating systems.

I havent had a chance to run Yellow Dog Linux. YDL is officially supported by Sony, so it only makes sense it would have some advantages over other distros. However i personally believe you can play about with Ubuntu abit more and it is easier to use if your new to Linux.

Adds more features like being able to play RM, WMV, QUICKTIME, AVI FILES. Run files that PS3 would otherwise not detect. View webpages that the Sony web browser cannot render using Mozilla Firefox. Create and print Word Documents etc. Have one machine that can do it all really (a PC and Media Centre in one).

l followed an online guide and it was going good until this happened prior to installation.

cp: read error: input/output error
Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader

No default root fs was found, or one was found and it didn't contain a message: config file.

If no rootfs was found you can enter the shell here with 'sh'. Exiting will return you to this prompt. In the shell you can mount your rootfs as /nnt/root/.

Reasons this may have happened include:

- No drive with a rootfs was actually found.
- Your rootfs does not have the correct volume label of "/"
- Your rootfs is corrupt (use the rescue cd to fix this)."

After that it says kboot: and when I press enter it just keeps skipping another line.

And Install is invalid... can someone help me out?

Does this version have the updated kernel that gives it access to the ps3's wifi? That was the only reason I went with YDL 5.0.1 last time.

I can play them using VLC on YDL, Ubuntu shouldn't be any different as long as you follow a guide. It'd probably be even easier with apt-get. Not like YUM-ex is that hard though.
