i got my ps3 back a week ago after sending it in for a busted bluray drive. whenever i play games the fan will go insanely loud. just right now i was playing batman aa for not even 20 minutes and the fan suddenly starts to get loud. there isn't any dust on the system nor is the room hot. prior to the bluray drive breaking, the fan never went this loud for the 2 years i've owned it for. what should i do?

seeing as how i just paid sony 200 bucks to fix the damned console, i don't see the point of selling my 40gb then paying for the difference to get a slim.

Actually, the slim can be just as loud OR a bit louder then the original after long play times.

its summer, its hot, it overheats, stand it up when playing, this puts mroe air in the console, and take a house fan and put it on towards the vents under the disc tray, by the usb slots, this pushses hot air out of the console

You can always send it back, tell them it's not performing as it used to even after they "fixed it".

If the fan is really loud it means that the console is really hot, duh. However, it doesn't mean the PS3 is not properly working. Its been terrible hot around where I live for a week or so and as soon as I turn my PS3 on the fan turns on full blast. Is it annoying? Yeah. Is my PS3 gonna break? No. I still play it and it works just fine (early 80 gig model). On the cooler days here my PS3 runs quiet.

okay, i should probably make this more clear.

the problem occured after i got my system back from sony. before my ps3 broke, the fan never ever EVER got loud. i've had the ps3 for two years before this problem happened. my ps3 is always standing vertical.

Your fan never turned on before you sent it in, then maybe thats why you had to send it in in the first place. The fan is there for a reason, to keep the system cool if you never hear it then thats when you should be worried.

so you're saying it's perfectly normal to have your ps3 fan go from quiet to hairdryer loud 20 minutes into playing? i find that extremely hard to believe especially since it's not hot outside, infact it feels like spring outside.

I wouldn't contemplate getting a new PS3 over the fan issue. I do worry sometimes that maybe the PS3 is not staying cool, due to no change in temperature. But I have had my PS3 for 2 years as well and have left it running a game for long periods of time before. Obviously when the PS3 is running a game it is working harder and some games just make the PS3 work harder than usual but I doubt it means your PS3 is gonna go caput on you.

I know what the TC is going through. My fat PS3 would get really loud after 20 minutes of play. My slim is nowhere near as loud as my fat PS3 was. I can't believe the difference.

Some people think that this is a sign of the ylod, and im not skeptical because thats what happened to me. Yours is probably more vulerable since it was already open and fixed once before. Might want to back up your data.

I just did that actually. They told me the fan should never be heard (or be that loud). My got loud enough that i had to turn up my tv and so they told me to send it in (just got mine back from them too so the fixing was free).

id its getting that loud something is not right unless you play it in a oven. my first PS3 did that. after about 2 to 5 minutes it would always get super loud. just like you say it sounded like a small hair dryer. you might try the speed fan test, also known as the self cleaning feature. i dont remember how to do it but there are vids on youtube ect telling you how. after doing that to my first ps3 its stoped getting loud. i ended up takeing it back for a new for other resones. any way try that. its simple to do.

Don't put it in a entertainment center, leave plenty of air space around it. Try blowing it out with co2 spray. Turn on the AC or open a window.

My fat PS3 also gets pretty noisy after about 20 minutes of playing. But its no where near the loudness of the 360 (old 20gb pro). that dang thing is a turbine and about twice as loud as my gaming rig!

so last week i finally sent in my ps3 to fix the fan problem (sony did it out of good will). i got it back on friday, instead of 20 minutes, the fan will go off in 5 minutes. i emailed sony about it and they basically told me to get lost. my friend is currently borrowing my ps3 atm, he has it laid out on the ground with LOTS of breathing space and the system still goes louder than a 360. i'm in a bit of a doozy with the ps3 eh?

It sounds to me that they put a louder fan in it. I had my 360 refurbed and it sounded like someone was blow-drying their hair behind my TV. The console was in an open space and everything, but as soon as I turned it on it was so loud I couldn't stand to play it. I can only suggest that you get a stock fan from eBay and try and replace it. I think the factories that fix the consoles automatically put more powerful fans in there just incase you're having overheat problems. Thats what they told me about my 360 even though I sent it in to have a broken USB port repaired. I was mad. You have every right to be, too. Just check into the fan swap if you're up for it.

based on experiments i've conducted, soul calibur 4 usually takes about 10-20 mins for the fan to go 360 loud, while uncharted 2 takes about 5-10. mw2 and cod4 take about 15 minutes. it's strange, my ps3 isn't even close to being hot.

Send it back ASAP, my refurb 60gb had the same problem. The day i got it back i started playing motorstorm 2, after 2 minutes of gameplay the fans were at full blast. They will replace it for free since its only been a week. My refurb was so bad it started shutting of on its own, it gave me a message saying it was overheating, and it will power down.

they won't accept it, i messaged them the day i got my console back. i don't think they gave me a warranty as i didn't pay them 150 for the "service" job.
