Hi
If your machine is under warranty contact Sony, (08705 99 88 77 (calls charged at standard BT National Rate)) which I have just done today 18/01/08 with the same problem. They will simply replace your machine (not cables or box) for another one, and so everything on your machine is lost I'm afraid. They will not exchange just the hard drive either. I'm expecting mine on Monday 22nd
If your machine is out of warranty, then either reformat the hard drive using a laptop, or external enclosure, and the PS3 will then reformat it once its re-inserted and working. (if you can't do this take it to any local PC place who should be able to do this for next to nothing for you) There is nothing on the hard drive required for the PS3 so son't worry about reformatting your disk. OR buy a new SATA hard drive (any capacity) and use this instead. You should be able to get a SATA 2.5" hard drive for about £40, depending on the size you need. The easiest way to ensure you get the right replacement is remove the one in the PS3 and search on the part number on Google etc for a replacement.
Hope that helps
Stephen
