Has 100% of the cell's power been used yet?

I havent been keeping up to date with wuts happening with the ps3. I heard that MGS4 uses 100% of the ps3 power and also heard that hideo set his expectations too high for the ps3 and the ps3 fell short. Does that mean the best looking and playing game wont be able to surpass MGS4?

No, I doubt we'll see it use it's full power 'til near the end of it's life cycle, like the PS2.

Console power is "determined" by the developer. A developer can say that there game uses ##% but it depends on how they use the CPU,GPU and RAM. Ps3 games will always keep on looking better. Naughty Dog said Uncharted uses 30% which means the way they made the game is 30% but Uncharted 2 can use 40% and look 5 times better.

No system has ever reached its full potential. If the PS2 was still the main platform and these new consoles werent around, then you would still see improving graphics on PS2. Its all just theoretical limits and there are so many different aspects that can be pushed there is no such thing as using 100% of a platform.

There is always some untapped power, new tools, methods, and skills to push a platform even further.

Like this for example. Many claim that games like GoW2, MGS3, RE4, and FFXII pushed the PS2 to its limits when realistically they each pushed the PS2 in there own directions and are considered the max simply because these are the last huge titles the PS2 saw. If Gow3, MGS4, FFXIII, and RE5 were all PS2 games they would still show improvements over the last ones.

Don't quote me on this, but I think much of his disappointment came from the current limitations of blu-ray media (Kojima wanted to make the game bigger).
To keep gameplay smooth, I believe redundant data on the disc had to be used to counter the relatively slow read/access speeds of the BD reader.
Pure speculation here, but perhaps Sony also imposed some kind of installation size limit (under 5GB), hence the need to install each act separately.
I'm sure these restrictions could've have been sidestepped if the minimum HD space available for all end-users was much greater.

As for the PS3's 'power', I'm not sure how this is gauged.
If it's use of SPE's, then I don't think any dev (so far) has utilized all of the available six (out of eight total).
Like already stated, increased familiarization with the console's architecture will yield better looking games down the road.

No game will do 100% because there's so much power in the Cell Processor. There's different ways to use it, so even if one game comes close to it, another dev might find a different way to tap into the processor and get more out of it then another game. MGS4 uses a lot and it's an amazing game, but KZ2 uses the CP in a different way and will do more in terms of processing than MGS4 does. There's no game that uses 100% for the PS2 either.

Bluray discs do read slower than DVD's, that's why load times are relevant for MGS 4. There's no way a game could run continously without loading in Bluray because otherwise the game would

run

like

this

. I know MGS 4 along with RE 2 maxed out the double-layer BD of 50gb or so, but as far as power goes, even if it's theoretical, developers are still learning the system. True "power" won't be breached until games only look slightly better than than the year before..

when or if this happens before a new console is released the dev team creating the 100% CPU/GPU game would no doubt boast about it so in a way we'd know i think anyways :P

Heavy Rain looks damn good, but I doubt it'll use all of the PS3. As well as GOW3. It would be interesting to see any game that uses a console's "full capacity."

I have a question? Where do you see how much percentage of the Cell´s power is used in each game ? :)

I have high expectations upon cell´s power on Final Fantasy XIII and Killzone 2 also.

"Hella!" lol. Teh Cellz doesnt have this mystical power. Some developers are better at coding than others and thats a fact. I game on a PC and certain games that look extremely gorgeous sometimes use less resources than a game that looks like utter crap. For instance, Assasins Creed looks a lot better than Call of Juarez, yet Call of Juarez is a complete resource hog and runs at less FPS at max compared to Assassins Creed at max. Its all in how the game is coded.

Um, by the nature of the SDK's, 100% of "t3h c3ll"s processing is always used in a game. The problem is in editing the SDK to allow devs to cram as much into the same amount of processing time as the hardware and software will allow.

The Cell still have not been figured out yet. The only Devs that seemed to be able to use the Cell efficiently is Naughty Dog and Guerrilla. The tech behind the Cell is pretty impressive and I can't wait to see where Devs will take this technology to.

Here is a LINK of the engine that Guerrilla created to make KZ2. On page 43 and on it explains how they are using the SPU's.

Don't know if there is any game to date that uses all of the cell(PPU and SPU's). What I do know is that almost all multiplat games that was ported to the PS3 only uses the PPU to do all the work that is done on the 3 cores of the 360. KZ2 might be the first game to actualy ise all the SPU's. Also MGS4 was to use 4 of the 7 SPU's.

It's really not that big of a secret. The number of Cores are not important but ow you use each Core is. One Dev can make an all around superior game with 2 Cores compared to the Dev that used 3. A Dev can say I was able to get this result with 3 Cores but if you do not know how that Dev coded them than your results will be different.

How can you guys think that there is such a thing as using so and so much % of ps3's power. Pretty much every game ever released for the ps3 uses 100% of ps3's power. The thing that makes games look better is the devs finding new and more efficient ways of using that power. It's not like 30% of the power is easy to use and then you have to be some master dev to unlock the remaining 70%. It's about using those 100% in the most efficient way possible.

True. Read awhile back that each level of Resistance 2 was about 5GB before they compresed it down. If they can utilize the "theoretical" power of the core efficiently, why not stick with 5-10GB per level and make a 2disc game? Would take longer, but with a dedicated team behind the project, there'd be no chopping down visual elements (Kojima Productions).

How do you estimate that?

If a game uses 100% of your processor, it might be because it pushes the limits of the PS3, or because it is poorly programmed. Games like GoW2 or FFXII would not be possible in the early PS2 years because they wouldn't be able to pull them off.

i feel as well that the games will indeed get better with time, mainly because the cell was so complecated to begin with nobody knew how to use it, and some still don't as we still have crappy multiplates.  same thing happens with othersystems as well but to a lesser extent, and also game engines

thing is tho they might not even be able to use 100% of the cells power due to the ram limitations, you can only feed the cell so much info at a time...

from what i've read from developer feedback, the ps3 is only having about 30-50 percent of the cell's power being used, the full capacity is usually only used by the end of a console's lifespan like with god of war 2
