We just got them in at the Target Store I work at.  Looks pretty slick.  It is like the one that came out for the 360:  More fans and better airflow.  It snaps on back and on the right side (the sides the air vents from).  Black in color and the right side one matches the contour of the case perfectly.  It also has the fan power switch/speed control in front.  You can set the speed of the fan (something tells me it may be noisy)

It has a "pass through power" adaptor so the fan can get power from the PS3 plug and you dont need to take up another plug on the power strip (the person who invented power strips deserves a medal by the way :D)

The only thing I worry about is dust:  More airflow = more dust.  But I guess the dust will be clogging the Intercooler and you can remove that to clean it.  I dont have the cooler yet.

On a side note:  can you clean the PS3 vents by just running a vacuum hose over the intakes?  Just wanna make sure its safe to do that.

Don't need an extra cooler on PS3 unless you're not leaving it enough air space.

waste of money i say

the PS3 fans were made to take and extract the heat that is built up or else they would have put in different fans if those that are in there now couldnt handle it

A terrible waste of money. They also have the tendency to help break your systems. The forced air flow from the fans helps to overwork the fans built into the systems, which often results in overheating or breakdown.

The ps3 has had a fantastic track record in terms or reliability.  Why would you want to mess with that?

you also got to think

sony for sure probably tested it during different temps and not just a normal temp

just to make sure that if someone living in an extremely hot area that has one wont have to worry just like someone living in a freezing area wouldnt have to worry

LOL....I think the responses in this thread represent the vast majority of ps3 owners. So the bottom line is that the ps3 intercooler isn't going to get a lot of love.

I have my PS3 on a side table where it gets lots of air from a nice breeze coming through my house so i don't really need one. But if you have it inside an entertainment center that is kind of small then yes, i would advise getting one.

I have left my ps3 on for a max of 5 or 6 hours so far and personally i dont think that it heated up that much it was just normal, so i dont worry. But is it just me or when you eject a disc after playing the disc is hotter than the system feels.

Aftermarket "performance enhancing" parts are a slap in the face to Sony engineers and designers.

They are made the way they are for a reason.

Intercoolers are a great way to fry your system and nullify the warranty. All at the same time.

Third party coolers aren't really necessary ever. These systems (no matter what the evil-fanboys say) don't leave the company without being rigorously tested. Cooling is an important factor in testing. This is something to worry about with computers but only because they can be upgraded or otherwise modified. Game System are different. Very little changes between when you bought it and when it is tucked away in a closet to make room for the next great generation of systems. You're better off making sure to place it in a well ventilated area than buying third-party coolers.

Think about it this way. If one of us thinks to test something, than the people who test them for a living (with their Bachelor's Degrees in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/etc.) sure as heck did too!;)

I had decided against getting one, mainly when I thought of it ramming air into the fan thats in there already.  Sony really knows how to design a case, gets really good flow.  I may just run the vacuum hose over the vents a few times a month to make sure no dust bunnies make a home in there.

I have been running Folding@Home since April 20th and already have 20 WUs, so it flies.

I don't have one myself but the few people I know that got one said it worked really good and kept the system really cool.

its just as pointless as the 360 one.

No ¬_¬

Aslo, the PS3 cools just fine o.o i am dead impressed :D Im actualyl interested what fans they use, as its so quiet, and how much of the heat is placed into heatsinks.

I debated one when I first got my PS3 only because I thought the rumors of the PS3 being very hot were true. As it turns out if you keep it well ventilated it stays pretty cool. I mean it gets warm but no warmer than say a router, or a Wii which is always warm. Also to answer the TC's question, yeah you can run a vacuum over the vents. Personally I use canned air to clean mine out, helped my PS2 out quite a bit.

My ps3 has gotten warm, but not to the level it needs an extra cooler...and I really don't want to void the warrenty. Besides, the PS3 is a well built machine, seems like you really gotta be abusing it if you break it

I have had my PS3 on 24/7 since Folding@Home came out and when I not playing games it's folding away.  I have not had any problems with my system at all and it barly puts out warm air, not by any means hot.  I had thought about getting one of thoughs intercoolers when I first got my PS3, but after putting it though its paces for the last few weeks I know its not needed.

Im up to 143 W/U by the way :)
