I have the original 20 GB PS3. Every time I buy a new game or replay an old one and I start it up, it will tell me I need more space at least 3000MB or so. When I go to the system info it says I still have 18GB available. Why is this? Is there any way I can fix it?

i recommend transferring your save files onto an usb, then restore your hdd from the ps3 settings list. But then youll lose all your trophies and such, so idk, i guess buy a bigger hdd, then transfer your info.

No you wont. Your trophies are connected to your PSN account. When you log in PSN with a new HDD it will sync all your trophies.

Trophies are stored offline so as long as you resync before the drive is swapped you'll be fine..

Your login, savefiles, music and videos can be backed up using the backup utility and a FAT32 formatted USB storage device.
