hdmi 1.3 has the potential to produce much more colors on screen(if you have a set that supports it) as well as gives you uncompressed sound. right now only a handfull of tv's will accept 1080p over component wires, so given the choice i would say get hdmi no question.

I used to use the PS2 component cables for my PS3 then got an HDMI cable and it seems a little bit better.  One thing though is that HDMI is fully digital and will be able to use any HDCP encryption that digital media (Blu Rays etc) may use in the future.   No Blu Rays have this HDCP encryption yet but they may in the future... with HDMI your safe either way.... you can get quality cables on monoprice.com for less than 20 bucks (6 ft gold plated)... I use them and the picture is perfect on my 34" sony HDTV.

Component won't play 1080p only 1080i, 720p and lower.

The HDMI Cable will get you a better color and sharpen image.

Component can play 1080p. But some TVs don't accept 1080p over component. I know that Sharp's TVs accept 1080p over component.

Are you sure you read the manual right For gaming it should accept 1080p threw either connection and for Blu-Ray movies its only 1080p threw HDMI so im 99% sure component can output 1080p for gaming.

You're wrong, I'm currently using Components with my HDTV and I'm getting 1080p no problem (it says Video Mode: 1080p in the corner of my screen every time I boot up my PS3)

My HDMI cable is in the mail though

The confusion is coming from the video playback, it needs HDMI to output 1080p.  That means Blu Ray movies, and 1080p content from the Playstation store.

To eliminate the Confusion PS3 GAMES=COMPONENT/HDMI to output 1080p. BLU-RAY MOVIES HDMI ONLY to output 1080p.
