Ok....I've got a question. I am going in and getting a PS3 here pretty soon. My tv has HDMI on it, and I have a speaker setup. I want to use my surround speakers. How is that gonna work? Can you plug up the HDMI cable to my tv AND the av cables to the surround speakers and play the volume through the speakers? Will that work? Does any of this make sense?

Yes you can - I do that with an optical cable as my speaker cable. You have to go in the settings in the PS3 - audio and set it to output audio through av cables as well. I run sound both through HDMI and av cables so I can get either one. Sometimes I just use my headset and that runs through the tv and not the receiver so that is why I have it like that.

You will not get as good sound this way compared to running through a HDMI switching receiver etc - but it will be a good setup and if you ahve a good receiver it will be like when you run sound from a digital cable box to the receiver.

According to the manual (granted I'm intrepreting what you're saying), you can run an HDMI cable from the PS3 to your surround sound receiver, and a second HDMI cable from the surround sound reciever to your HDTV.  It sounds weird, but according to the manual "Both audio and video will be output from the HDMI cable.  You can output picture via an audio device."

Even though the PS3 isn't directly connected to the TV, you will still get picture and sound.

As people said, you can do this without problem.  I myself am trying to decide if I need a receiver with HDMI (which are consirably more expensive) or just use the optical.  Those who know anything about this... how much better is the sound via HDMI?

The sound will be no better on games. The only audio thing you need HDMI for is if you wish to carry the non-lossy compression formats like Dolby TruHD or DTS Master Audio over a digital connection from Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players.

That is not necessarily true. Resitance has an uncompressed 7.1 PCM sound track that just kills the normal DD 5.1 track. More and more PS3 games will use uncompressed sound which runs around 4.5Mbps over the small 648kpbs dd5.1 gives. To truly enjoy the new surround sound formats you need a receiver that can do it and a good set of speakers with a wide dynamic range.

I hadn't heard about that. That's pretty great though.

Very well, it won't sound any better on any games that lack said HD audio soundtracks

The 7.1 PCM sound track on resistance is incredible, I crank it up and it sounds so real its scary, the depth of the soundstage combined with the silky smooth bass response is incredible. Makes normal dd5.1 sound compressed and tinny.

Denon has one listed as spring 07, for around $1500. I read a report in the WSJ that said that the difference between 1.2 and 1.3 was very slight and only noticeable to audiophiles.

I plan to buy a new receiver TrueHD sound for HDMI 1.3, I wait.

My old receiver don't has HDMI. that's only digital out (Optical) for can use 2.1 audio or 5.1 audio

I'm interesting that's mystery  HDMI can't use 2.1 channels audio, need 5.1 channels TrueHD or more high audio .

the blu-ray movie has normal audio 5.1 than small percent about HDtrue like uncompressed PCM audio for use HDMI 1.3 on  be future

PS3 has eqiupped with HDMI 1.3

HDMI 1.1

- Provides up 8 to (7.1) channels of lossless uncompressed PCM audio.

- Provides all pre-HDMI Dolby and DTS formats (5.1/6.1).

-Provides DVD-Audio streming as PCM

HDMI 1.2

-Adds SACD streaming as proprietary DSD format.

HDMI 1.3

-Adds up to 8 (7.1) channels of post-HDMI Dolby and DTS formats (TrueHD,etc.)

$1500? Looks like i'll be buying a 1.1. or 1.2. The 1.1 denon that does 7.1 pcm is $650-700. I can handle that, but $1500 for a receiver = Never

They're talking about the high-res audio, and it's definately NOT only noticeable to philes

The costs will come down quickly, $4-500 by next year. Considering that there is no reciever implementation yet for DTS Master Audio, it's still not something you want to spend money on just yet
