Yes, HDMI cables are for HDTVs only. BTW Codeman got ripped off, you can get gold plated HDMI cables at monoprice.com for $15-20. They are quality cables trust me - i worked at Circuit City and by far cables were the most marked up items: upwards to 90% markup. I usually only paid 10% of the original price when i bought them with my employee discount so that shows how much a ripoff paying $100 for cables is.

I highly recommend getting HDMI cables when you get an HDTV, colors look a lot more vibrant and its the best quality picture of all cables. Also if you dont buy from a retailer like best buy or circuit city, they are reasonably priced.

the yellow white and red are COMPOSITE cables. the cylindrical input is S-Video input (i think, from your description). S-Video is a higher quality image than composite (yellow white red). Here are cables in rank of quality of picture/sound:

1. HDMI - Completely Digital signal. Best video quality and best audio quality (can transmit 5.1 channel digital signal too)

2. Component (Red, Blue and Green cable - plus white and red for stereo audio channels) - Highest Quality Analog signal, capable of transmitting High Def signals. audio is same as composite and svideo unless using a separate optical digital audio cable

3. S-Video (usually all black cable - one plug which is round with multiple pins in connector - looks sorta like a computer cable) - Better quality than composite, but not capable of displaying High Def signals. audio is same as composite with white and red cables

4. Composite (yellow white and red cable) - basic level of image quality. white and red cables capable of stereo audio output.

Hope this clears things up.
