I've a TV that's around 25-27 inches. It can play HD stuff and has ports for both HDMI and component cables. Is there abig difference in quality between the two cables? Or is it roughly the same in which if I buy the component cables, it won't make much of a difference? Thanks

i didn't really see a difference between the two, when you use component cables and you set your tv to cool or vivid settings it looks almost exactly the same as hdmi...

now this is all my opinion and it is what my eyes are telling me, but most people are gonna say you neeed hdmi...

HDMI cables look better on my tv, with component cables I see some noise that I wouldnt see with an HDMI cable.

The bigger your TV, the more you'll see the difference. What resolution is your TV?

With such a small screen, there wouldn't be that much of a difference. It really has alot to do with the quality of the TV. If you happen to have PS2 component cables, they will work on the PS3 as a test. Also, don't buy a $100 HDMI cable if you go that route. Buy 1 online from somewhere like monoprice. I got my cable for $6 and its been killer.

I've noooo idea what resolution my tv is. All I know is that it's widescreen and about 27 inches. Seeing how the HDMI doesnt make too much of a difference I think I'll probably go with the component cables as they're compatible with the PS2 as well. I think it's cheaper too right? One more thing. I know this is the PS3 forum but does the component cables make a big difference for the PS2 as opposed to the standard 3 pin cable? thanks!

certain games look nicer, but most of the older games on the ps2 look grainy and they just look bad with component cables...

It can make colors a little crisper, but it really only helps if the game has a Progressive option (i.e. God of War)

Based on your screen size I am assuming that your TV is not full HD (1920x1080) so HDMI isn't as much as an improvement than component. However since HDMI sends a digital audio and video signal the colors and sound are going to be more crisp... Buy the cheapest HDMI cable you can find because its digital its a signal made up of 0's and 1's therefore the rip-offs that say "this is coated with a gold lining for better signals, blah, blah, blah" are false (you either get a signal or not from HDMI there is no "SUPERIOR" picture between one HDMI cable and another... All in all, get HDMI for future TV sets you might own, and for the present it will give you a slightly better overall experiance

If you have a 1080p HDTV then the HDMI is the only way to go, but if you have a 1080i/720p HDTV then the component cables will work just as good and the difference will barely be noticable if at all. Since the PS3 doesn't come with either though I would just get the HDMI cables so if you ever get a 1080p TV in the future you are all ready to go.

I have both sets of cables and HDMI does look somewhat cleaner although the component cable does a very good job. And when looking to get the compoent cable the best one is the Sony brand (the one for the PS2 and PS3 are the same). I paid about the same or maybe slightly less than one of those universal cable sets. You can check prices on the PS3 web site under the options tab (a few weeks ago I was checking there and the price difference in all the cables was less than a dollar, except I think one of the Monster Cables that was about $5.00 more than any other cable).

I'd recommend HDMI cables for HDTV, for me personally component cables didn't give me as clear of a sound when I tried it.

The picture quality looked almost the same, it's very tough to tell the difference.

Make sure yout TV does have HDMI input though, I know it's a silly thing to reminder however I was surprised how many folks forget about it.

That's true because there were a lot of HDTV's in the begining of the HD market used DVI instead of HDMI (which still is no big deal with a HDMI to DVI cable). The only difference in the HDMI and DVI is the fact that DVI doesn't support any kind of sound where HDMI can support all the way up to true 7.1 surround sound.

when i got my hdmi cables i actually saw a big difference in the color boldness more than everything, but if you do get an hdmi cable make sure the video settings are at the optimal settings for hdmi. edge/detail/crispness were marginally better. another thing is it really cut down on power strip interference. I had the PS2 component cables and there were transparent bands that would continually go across the screen. with the hdmi the screen was perfect.

go to monoprice.com for hdmi cables you can get them for under $20, NEVER buy them from a retailer they will mark it up really bad.

I kinda went ahead and bought http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10082075&catid=#MoreInfo

It is indeed a bit pricey, however not as bad as Monster HDMI which was over 110$...

Either way, I'm happy and PS3 is performing in order.
