I treated myself to a brand new 46" Bravia HDTV for christmas. Considering i was on a 20" box of rust before, it's quite the treat. however, for some reason in games like uncharted 2 and other games famed for their graphics, the edges on characters and some of the scenery seems overly sharpened. I don't quite know how to explain it, i guess the best word i can think of is janky. The edges look rough, and i was wondering if there might be some setting in the TV/Ps3 that i might wanna look into to fix it, or maybe it is just my TV, any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I just tried that, and it didn't seem to make any noticeable difference.

Maybe i'm just new to HD, but i always assumed edges would be smooth.

Are you using a HDMI or Component cable with your new TV or are you still using the old composite cable?

You did switch the output settings on your PS3, right? I'm pretty sure you would have, but it never hurt to ask :)

Ospov

Yeah, i did :p , it's just the edges of models that looks bad, the rest looks absolutely beautiful. I was wondering if it might be the Anti Aliasing on the playstation that gives these edges janky look. :S

1) What is the video output setting (resolution) for the system?

2) Did you update your system?

Most PS3 games are 720p. Not every PS3 owner have their system set for 720p, 1080i, 1080p displays.

It's not a problem with your TV so I'd set all yours TV settings back to how they were. Consoles these days are only powerful enough to handle games at 720P, which is a step below your TV. In other words, your TV is better than your consoles. The image is so clear that the game's aliasing and flaws are very apparent.

Usually HDTVs are set out of the box as Vivid setting. They do this so when the set it up in the stores with all those bright lights the TV will look best and look like it has brighter colors than the rest. Try customizing your TV setting or change it to Standard and see if that does anything. My KDSA3000 Bravia has a Detail Enhancer and Edge Enhancer setting, I have the Detail set as High and the Edge set as Medium. See if your TV has similiar settings.

Wrong. You have to set the PS3 to output at 720p, then the t.v will display at that level. If it's set at 1080i / 1080p, then the PS3 will try to upscale to those levels.

You are both wrong. You need to set the PS3 to output at 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The PS3 will then choose which is best, for Uncharted 2 its 720p as the game is 720p. The PS3 then sends a 720p signal to the TV, if you have all 3 resolutions ticked, it will does this automatically. The TV (if 1080p) will then upscale the 720p image from the PS3 to 1080p (native resolution of the TV) unless there is black borders around the image which means it would be in 720p.

Mages_Decent, it won't make a difference what you set. In the end, you TV will scale the image to fit the screen. The jaggies will still be there, and will be equally prominent. You won't make the image quality any better.

@mages_decent go to settings then display then video then custom and uncheck 1080i and 1080p. that will make it only go to 720p. shouldnt make a difference though....the system knows if the game is 1080 or 720 and figures out if your tv is 720 or 1080 and finds what is the best resolution

You can disable the 1080i> 1080p features to keep it at 720p.

first its always good to scroll through your tv's settings (contrast, sharpness, brightness, color, etc) and adjust them to how you like them and feel they look. factory settings seldom please the consumers eye. then, go to your ps3's video output settings and make sure youre in 720p. next, go to display settings and adjust your hdmi range and whatnot. if you cant start to get the image more to your liking through tuning these things then i dont know what to tell ya.

nah, it's quite normal, there are rough edges on every xbox360/ps3 games

solving this is as easy as sitting further away from your TV,

there will be a distance where everything will actually looks beautiful, whether it's 1080p or 720p

hope that helps, since that was my own experience. doing calibration like guys above could help, but sitting further from the TV helped me :)

Because not all games play at 1080p, you can check the resolution on the back of the game box.

Agreed. Try popping in a DVD with the THX calibration, which is easy to find. You can use it to adjust your system. The best option, though, is to get a DVD of Digital Video Essentials from Amazon. It's a handy tool for calibration most of your consoles, and offers professional quality assistance. I highly recommend this if you want to get the best possible picture... unless you have an incredibly crappy TV. Finally, various sites have HDTV calibration walkthroughs. You could download some test patterns and use the online instructions for getting your picture just right. You would need special blue filter glasses for fixing color/hue but this can be skipped.

Which doesnt tell you anything. COD WM2 states 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Its neither of them, its 600p.
