Well, this has become more difficult that I had hoped. I bought a 750GB External HDD to back-up my PS3, but I can't get it to FAT32. I'm running Windows Vista, does anyone know a safe way to format my HDD? I've tried using command prompt, and a program called Swissknife. Windows says the HDD is too big, and Swissknife won't run on Vista. If I can't find a solution, I may return the 750GB for a smaller size. Any help is appreciated. :)

Return it for a smaller size. Who needs 750GB? Even 240 GB is enough. Actually, to be honest, even 240 GB is too much. But then again, it depends on the person. If you download every single thing on the PSN network and own every single game, then yeah, you should get 240 or something higher than that. But not 750....I mean 750...that's just way too much.

I think 500GB is the most a PS3 is able to support anyway. At least that's what Best Buy told me when I bought mine a year ago.

Well, we were considering using for our computer afterwards, and we got a deal on it when we bought it, but I think I will just have to go with a smaller drive to be safe.

I wouldn't put too much stock into what Best Buy (or any retailer) tells you. There's no official release from Sony, or anyone else for that matter, on what the PS3's max HDD size is. I know 750GB external shouldn't be an issue, because a friend of mine has a 1TB external for his. As for replacing the HDD in the PS3... as long as it's 9mm it should fit and work.

It's only automatic when you're replacing the internal drive. You have to format to FAT32 for external drives before trying to use them with the PS3. I know on a Mac it's possible to do this with the "Disk Utility" application.

You can only convert up to 32 GB on a hard drive, that's why it's called FAT 32. What you really want to convert it to is FAT format, which is different and allows you to convert more space.

You misunderstand, an external HHD cannot be used for PSN titles or game data. Also, 750 may be too much for you but that doesn't mean it's too much for anyone else.

That just isn't true at all. 32 means it has a 32 bit table elements. The actual maximum size FAT32 can support is around 8TB. There is an issue with XP where it can't format a FAT32 drive above 32GB, but that's a bug not a limit.
