As many other kids, I want to get a ps3 for Christmas. Actually, my dad likes it BUT there is one problem and I will highly respect any answer: PS3 has a 1.3 HDMI output, that I know for sure. But my dad read on the internet that there are rumours that PS3's HDMIt gives only 1.3 video, but not audio. Reason why he wants also audio is that if my dad will by PlayStation, it will be a part of our modern hometheatre, and he won't allow any weekness there. I know that it is hard to understand me but I want that console!!!

Yes, a surround system. More clearly, HDMI receiver. That's the official reason of my dad's uncertainty:cry:

please dont use God in a sentence and yes it does support 1.3 hdmi but only for video. right now u cant get the 2 new audio formats because it doesnt have 1.3 hdmi for audio, but sony said that can be fixed with a simple firmware update, but they are working on other things now. if it can be fixed with an update then im sure theyll fix that later on. and dude if ur dad wont buy u one, get a job. go to ur city hall and ask for a job. they have so many job there for kids.

HDMI 1.3 provides High Definition Video as well as Surround Sound Audio. It will work on your HDTV right now until he can get a real surround sound speaker system. Be happy you have an HDTV because I have a 36" SDTV!

I believe it does audio too. I have my 60GB ps3 hooked up to my HDTV using just 1 hdmi cable. It provides the video and audio. I don't have an audio system so I use the built-in speakers on my hdtv. It is great. Just 1 wire.

ok look. it does support audio, but it doesnt support the 2 new audio formats. 1.3 is supposed to support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD if ur reciever supports that. every hdmi cale supports audio and video, but not all of them support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.. if ur dad knows about home theater than im guessing thats what hes trying to figure out. if u dad doesnt care about the 2 new audio formats then why are u asking this quewtion.

ask ur dad if hes worried about it not supporting audio or Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

The above is the correct answer - to many people here answering $hit they know nothing about - joke is on you guys. Now 1) this can MOST likely be fixed by firmaware - rumors go both ways. However, your dad needs to go look at his surround system that he is looking at. Despite it being cutting edge etc it is likely it can't take full advantage of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD anyways (not if he already bought it).... So get him to do more research to see if he actually needs it

the ps3 is also one of the only blu-ray players that supports 1.3 hdmi. there are very few and the ones that due cost 500 or 600 more than the ps3. if u dad doesnt want to buy it, wait until they release an update that can fix it. i think they will later on, but the ps3 just came out a yr ago and they are working on so many other things. hope u get ur ps3 though.

That thread goes pretty deep into what the PS3 can and cannot do. It is pretty much agreed in the thread that the PS3 will be able to be upgraded through firmaware. It is also stated that the PS3 can pass through TrueHD as PCM and your receiver should be able to do the conversion. If your receiver can do that you have removed one of the two obstacles and maybe that will help convince your dad that the second issue will be removed too.

Pablito - not an idiot - I know I restated a lot of what you said, but also pointing out to others here not to jump on people for asking valid questions. Just because they don't know that it is a valid question they don't have to be jacka$$es about it (davidballantyne)... I did say you had the right answer - did you miss that. I also pointed out that there are speculations that Sony cannot update the PS3 to do DTS-HD, but now added some more in the line of it should be possible

Not about sound, but about being updated - no other player will come close to the support that the PS3 has seen and will see

haha do what i did.

i wanted a PS3 but just bought a Wii, so was like ok i'll get my old man to chip in. just got him to go halves. his value being the Blu-Ray/DVD player and even music storage for our games room. my value being, its a PS3. worked for me.

just use the angle of "well dad, you want a blu-ray player right? well, thats gonna cost you easily over $500 (AUD)...why not go halves in a PS3 with me? current special means only costs you $340 and you get everything you want and more"

If you want to convince your old man to get you a PS3 for Christmas, tell him that if you have a PS3 he won't have to spend anymore 'quality son-father' time with you, since you will be constantly occupied with your new PS3! That should work.

This should do the trick:

Information Compiled by: abdelmessih101

Disclaimer:

I've had this post saved on a Word document for a while now since many people have been thinking about getting a PS3 recently :)

Yeah, I know it's a long post, but there have been so many threads about people thinking about getting a PS3 for a while now. Most of the time, it turns out to be a simple question (probably much like yours, TC) about the different versions, or online play, or exclusives, or something else that the TC could answer for him/her-self easily if he/she did a little research. One day, it got so bad that I did all the research for them, compiled all the information, saved it on a word document, and tried to get it stickied. However, the mod didn't "see a need for it," so I just copy and paste it whenever there is a new question thread (several times a day) and force feed the information to these lazy people (including you TC). It usually answers everyone's questions. If you have a question that needs an answer from someone who physically has the system, then OK, but otherwise, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH OR I WILL FORCE FEED IT TO YOU.

Here is a link to the GameSpot PS3 Console Resource Center. Most of this information can also be found there. If you don't want to read that, then read this:

Should I get a PS3? Is it worth the money?

The answer is yes; definitely get a PS3

Of course it's worth the money and here's why:

Amazing PS3 Exclusives (currently out, and those to come):

  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Warhawk
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (my personal favorite - I highly recommend this game)
  • Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
  • Killzone 2
  • Haze
  • Home (not really a game; explained further in "Online" section)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • God of War 3
  • Kingdom Hearts III (or whatever they call the sequel)
  • Resistance 2 (or whatever they call the sequel)
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Versus
  • Lair, Eye of Judgement, and Folklore are all popular despite low reviews - check them out
  • Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (rumored, but very likely)
  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Tekken 6- The King of Iron Fist Tournament
  • Little Big Planet
  • Socom Confrontation
  • Unreal Tournament III- PS3 timed exclusive!
  • White Knight Chronicles- formerly known as White Knight Story; it's an action RPG by industry pros

You can't argue with that list; trust me, it's well worth the money

For a full list that I won't put here for the sake of space, go to this site

Plus, don't forget:

Online service is free,

It's the cheapest form of Blu-Ray player on the market. In fact, other Blu-Ray players on the market START at around $800, so if you got a PS3 exclusively as a Blu-Ray player, you'd still be getting 50%+ off compared to the competition.

Most have backwards compatibility (hurry, the 60GB models w/ the best B/C are going fast)

What are the differences between the 4 SKUs (versions)?

You can check backwards compatibility for specific games here

60GB - limited availability, price somewhere near $400-$500 (depends where you get it from and what comes with it like bundles or value packs), uses the EE chip - 99% backwards compatibility, built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, SD, CF, and other flash card and memory slots/readers

80GB - $500 bundled w/ Motorstorm, uses software emulation (no EE chip)- 85% backwards compatibility (I've heard), built in Wi-Fi, 4 USB slots, has flash card and memory slots/readers (like 60GB)

40GB - $400, bundled w/ Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray, no PS2 backwards compatibility, PS1 backwards compatibiiliy, built in Wi-Fi, 2 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers

20GB - (I'm not sure if you can find this anymore),uses EE chip -99% backwards compatibility (like 60GB), 4 USB slots, no flash card and memory slots/readers, no Wi-Fi (you need an Ethernet cable to play online)

If you've got a PS2 and it still works, there's not much reason to go with the 80GB instead of the 40GB except for Motorstorm (if you like it), and a couple of extra USB slots. The memory is upgradable anyway.

If you don't have a PS2 or if it's broken, and you still want to play PS2/PS1 games, get the 60GB if you can, or the 80GB if you can't find the 60GB.

If the memory slots are important to you, then your options are the 60GB or 80GB versions.

*Note: I went with the 60GB version before the price drop, and I don't regret the $600+ I spent at all.

***NOTE*** All PS3 versions have PS1 backwards compatibility. The 40GB version is the only one without some form of PS2 backwards compatibility

What about the Online Service?

Online service on the PS3 (called the Playstation Network) is completely free.

The PS3 has the Playstation Store, where you can download free demos, videos, images, themes, and buyPS1 games, other arcade-like games, add-ons to PS3 games, and entire PS3 games (the only two available right now are Warhawk and Tekken 5).

I know that you can get TV shows and movies from Xbox Live, and the Playstation Network will be doing something like soon. The PS3 is also compatible with DivX movies from your PC and you can get movies on your PS3 that way.

Sony is due to release Home in Q1 2008; it's a virtual world where you can create and customize an avatar and a home for your avatar (ala The Sims). Also, you can access stuff from the Playstation Store in virtual shops, hang out at public spaces with other online PS3 users, and play virtual arcade games. You can text chat using your PS3 remote or keyboard or voice chat using a Bluetooth headset. You can invite your new-made friends back to your private home and share music and videos saved on your PS3, and even invite them to play multiplayer games together. There will also to be a trophy system comparable to the Xbox Live achievement point system, and you can display your trophies at you private place. In short, Home is AWESOME!

Here is a Gametrailers.com 25 minute Home walkthrough

Also, Sony is expected to make the Cross Media Bar (XMB) available to you while playing games online. It will hopefully be in one of the next few updates. Until then, however, the online format depends on the game (Resistance has a perfect format IMO).

On the XMB, once you log in to Playstation online account, you can see your buddy list, whether or not your buddies are online and what they're playing if they are online. You can send them a message or invite them to a chat room where you can use voice chat. You can also access saved music and videos from your XMB and hopefully this will soon be available in-game.

Most online games have voice chat and the quality depends on the headset. I have the headset that came bundled with Warhawk when I bought it from the store (for a total of $60, it saves $20 over getting them individually). It's works great.

I've had my PS3 since January 2007, and have experienced minimal (little to no) lag online or other problems in general. I've heard from others on this site with both the PS3 and 360 who have said that the gamers on Xbox Live are less mature and there is a lot more racism and cursing on Xbox Live than on the Playstation Network.

Even though I've never played on Xbox Live, I've heard from people who have used both that Xbox Live isn't that much better than the Playstation Network.

Nothing in his post that is really outdated - some games have been out for awhile, but that is about it. Rest is good to go.

Abdel - since it is a standing thing you use (saw it elsewhere) why don't you add something about how the bluray player gets updated through firmaware (upscaling as one example)....

I would just hammer out all the other spec's besides the audio to your dad(if you haven't already). Bring up the use of being able to access your PS3 on vacation through your PSP (maybe other device's i'm not aware of). You just have to be a salesmen and not take "no for an answer". Cut out ad's of PS3's and leave em hanging around the house in spots he'll see (tape one to the remote). I would just call an all out blitz on him.

Well, actually I AM not taking "no for an answer". I remind him about it every morning and evening. you just don't know my dad. he knows all that HI-FI stuff TOO well... he's like on an edge and a simple touch could make him fall (I mean buy me a PS3 of course :)). But the funny thing is that whenever I try go straight like "I WANNA PS3" he's like "are you sure? maybe you need a sweater better... ;)" And that really irretates me. so now I'm like a snake, curving and trying the best way!

I got that about your dad which is why I have kept replying :) - I am like that (and soon to be dad). If it was me and my son wanted it I would just want a well represented argument. Here is why I want it then you go into why he wants it. You got pretty much all answers in here so just put it together. And you seal it with - if you agree that we should buy it then here are the three different options 60 / 80 / 40 and then lay it out to why you would get each one...

Finally one thing that hasn't been brought up here is the coming ability for the ps3 to act as a dvr - that is another potential 80gb (if you go with that) or up to 200gb (if you swap harddrive later) of dvr space. If he likes hi-tech stuff that is pretty good... Now that is an add-on purchase not yet available.

good luck

The PS3 has OPTICAL OUT.

I have it hooked up to my Onkyo system.

Stated here (under A/V):

And here in Quick Reference Manual (page 4):

You've got something wrong, buddy. PS3 has an optical out for audio, if you don't have a HDMI IN. HDMI transfers A/V, not only one format.

P.S.: And what's about you ONKYO? Please tell me if it's is possible, because me and my dad are choosing a HDMI receiver also.

Just give him a platonic bj. Short and sweet. You'll be playing COD4 with the rest of us in NO TIME. Trust me.
