I think its broken. Today, I came home to put in Borderlands. The disk didn't show up, so I put in GTA4. Once again, no blue disk on screen. Then Uncharted. Still nothing. Then I tried Knowing (you know Nicholas Cage movie) and... it worked. I'm confused as to how a movie works while the games do not get noted. My guess is its the laser that does the blu-ray, since the DVD was a standard. I don't see what is wrong with the machine! I love my PS3, I love it so very much, but I'd like not to pay $300 for one that's not backwards compatible (but I will, I swear to god!) Please, help me! I want to play Borderlands and Uncharted!

Yeah uncharted is a real killer. Shame you can't play it. My friend had the exact same problem where his game discs are unable to read but movie discs can. Call sony, I will tell you now DONT attempt to repair the problem yourself you could be putting your health and the console at risk.

It's probably the lens (same thing happened to mine) but try this just in case.

If it's in warranty just send it to Sony. If it's out of warranty you can either get Sony to fix it for $150, or spend about $60 or so on a new lens and fix it yourself using online guides. Don't listen to the guy above, it's incredibly easy to fix the lens, and so long as you're careful you can't really mess anything up.

With my luck (and skill) I will NEVER try to open that thing. Its a 60GB, so if it fails on me, I can't play my PS2 games. My plan is to call a shop to see if they can do it if formatting the HDD doesn't work (I want linux and need a new HDD anyway).

This happened to me just a couple days ago, games don't show but movies and music will, Here's what I did, backed up all saves onto a flash drive then after hours of researching all you have to do is restore system. And even if for whatever reason your too "scared" to do this, sony's gonna do it anyway. And this way you save time and 150$ :D

Good. Hopefully it's not just your lens deciding to work again for a minute before dying for good. You'll know soon if that's the case.

I don't have the same problem; but I love my PS3 To death. and sometimes at night when I'm watching TV I keep hearing this "popping" noise every hour or so when my PS3 is off. I'm worried its gonna explode into pieces. xD but is that normal?

I think it's the only solution. Don't risk anything else.

make sure that you are in the GAME tab and not in MOVIE or VIDEO...but it could also be that PS3 had broken blu ray lector

If it's still working after awhile then you should be fine. Sometimes the lens will work again for a couple minutes before dying, but if that's the case you'll know it because it'll stop working very quickly.

It's normal. People say it's the plastic expanding or something, but I don't know.

Yes I'm pretty sure I was in the GAME tab (has that ever ACTUALLY been the problem?). The problem has been fixed thanks to this link: http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=34809384&f=290 I say anyone with this problem, try this. Also, my brother's been playing GTA4 for the past hour and a half now, I hope I'm in the clear.
