Could you help with this one? I'm after a WRPG but I have a bit of a criteria. I would love to get a WRPG which is 'big outdoors stylee' (like Dragon age, Oblivion, Skyrim etc) NOT a futuristic one like ME2 or Fallout.. but sometimes I play games whilst my young kids are around. So are there any good games like this which aren't rated 18 or M (ie no violence, no scary monsters) that would be ok to play with the kids around/watching? I've never played an RPG before.

Oh and it must have trophies.

Thanks.

hmm, does it really need trophies? Because Oblivion is fantastic and accessible. :)

Not sure if there's a game like that on the PS3 (I haven't played one I believe). But maybe Sacred 2 is something you're looking for, not sure about the game itself though as I haven't looked at it. I can count few JRPG's of that type, not WRPG's though as those tend to be violent. Fable fits the description, but that is an Xbox game.

Might I suggest Costume Quest though? It's a childish RPG that is somewhat open world, but not "big" mind you. It looks childish and stupid, but it's very very very fun (PSN downloadable game).

Since you listed Dragon Age, why not get Dragon Age? I'll bet the Ultimate Edition is dirt cheap by now. I played it and thought it was excellent. Although a word of caution - the framerate is not the best, it gets HORRIBLY choppy at times (like slideshow bad) due to too much action on screen. Mostly only a problem in the very final scene of the game, and during a couple of the DLC quests. The game is still amazingly fun, deep, and well put together. Dragon Age 2 is a much "smoother" game performance wise on PS3 with no such slowdown issues, but it's also a much less interesting game overall IMO.

Preferably, but I'm struggling to resist Oblivion, it looks too good.

Sacred 2 has a few too many scary beasts and fighting for the purpose. I have Costume Quest, my daughter plays it and loves it; I agree it is a fun game. Dragon Age Origins is the game I really want, but I don't think I could play it with the kids around. I often hear people talking about framerates but I have never seen any problems, that kind of thing doesn't bother me. Thanks for your suggestions so far.

Dragon Age:Origins is one of my all time favorite rpg's. shame DA2 seemed to lose track of the plot and was clearly rushed to the market.

very wierd criteria i must say. the "less violent" part is what makes it hard to decide. cant really think of a oblivion style rpg that isnt too violent

Oblivion has the "big outdoorsy style" that you're looking for (if that even exists.) And it's not too violent at all. If I'm not mistaken it was originally rated T but a PC mod allowed for nudity and it got changed to M across the board. No trophies though. Dragon Age: Origins is fantastic. I suggest that.

Deathspank has some RPG elements in it and is completely family friendly and cute. Not futuristic or apocalyptic either. It's not a true RPG either. And if you don't like Oblivion or don't enjoy Dragon Age, try not to judge the entire genre on that. WRPGs can differ quite a bit, especially when you're comparing Bioware and Bethesda games.

I gotta agree that Oblivion is not that violent and if your kids know the differenece between right and wrong and rea and fake it shouldn't be a problem especially with you playing with them. I know there is no trophies which can be annoying, before I became a pc gamer I was always a bit turned off by games that didnt have trophies lol. Its the same for Dragon Age origins, it may be bloody but it is not that bad. Its more graphic than oblivion but again I think your kids will be fine. There really aren't any WRPG's that are family friendly. The closest ones I can think of are Naruto Rise of a Ninja and Naruto: The Broken Bond but they are on the 360. I know Naruto is Japanese but both those games were ade by ubisoft and are based of the edited toonami version that was airing on TV at the time.

I would think Dragon Age would be fairly safe most of the time even with kids around. Though there is some incredibly lame/pointless "lovemaking" type relationships, including homosexual relationships. Bioware does the same thing in Mass effect. I just found all of that to be incredibly pointless if not insulting. However throughout most of the gameplay for 99% of the time there should be no problems, and you get to control the dialogue so just don't branch off into anything that might be torisquéfor kids.

As far as the framerate, slightly off kilter framerates don't bother me at all. It would be nice if all games maintained 30 or 60, but that just isn't the reality on consoles this gen. I can deal with framerates that hover in the 20's. However believe me when i say it almost starts to resemble a slideshow during the final battle scene, and during a few of the DLC quests that are also very "busy" with what's going on scene. But of course all the Oblivsion games, and Fallout have the same problems on PS3 at times. So there is really no way to avoid those terrible framerates unless we move up to PC gaming. I'll just say that Dragon Age was a great game, but the framerate was also possibly the worst for any PS3 game I've played.

You already answered your question lol

But you're missing out on a whole lot by only playing fantsy wrpgs. There's a lot to enjoy from stuff like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Fallout series and Mass Effect.
