Yep. Several people have reported this happening. Sony will replace it for you. From the article I read about 1% of the PS3 consoles are having this problem.

this sucks...its not even a month since i got it.

i went to the local sony distributer and they said i have to take it to their service center and they will fix it if its a minor problem or replace it if its hardware malfunction.

You are just talking out of your you know what...

then why is the ps3 so cheap compared to so many other blu ray players?

the ps3 has a blu ray drive a hdd and it can play games and has many other features all for $400??

im not saying the ps3 sucks i own 1 and i think its good but the hardware cant be as good as everyone thinks, so many ps3s are breaking because of faulty blu ray drives.....i will admit im wrong if you have a reason why the blu ray drives stop reading discs

The blu ray player in the PS3 is believe it or not, the best one because you can easily update it. The reason why it is so cheap is because Sony desperately wants the Blu ray format to win because there is A LOT of money to be made with it and guess what, they succeeded. They were losing money big time initially selling it for so cheap but it ended up paying off and they are starting to see the profit.

Just because SOME ps3's have faulty drives does not mean it's a piece of crap. Not all products are perfect and some of them WILL be defective but it doesn't mean all of them are. I have had my PS3 since October and have had no problems whatsoever.

wha?

all Blu ray players connect to the internet just like the PS3.

Hmm also to the person who said 1-2 weeks? My PS3 broke (UK here btw) and i had a new one sent to my door in 3 days. It could have been 2, but no one was in to pick it up. So i had to wait 3.

You can't update firmware on stand alone blu ray players.

i took it to the sony service center today without the warrenty card, recipte, bank transfer statement, and even the price sticker was torn off. i told then that i bought it from the local sony distributer so the lady just entered the serial number on the PS3 into the computer, printed out a piece of paper and handed it to me and said "2 weeks"

i hope they get it sooner...i cant wait 2 weeks

can u plz tell us what have u done with ur ps3 after the problems happen, like, how long have u been played? and how long have u turn it on? did u leave the disc in the drive? did u drop the console? what kind of games or movie did u play it on? is there a lot of dust in it? etc, if we all know why the disc drive is broken next time we can just prevent it.

You know, I love my PS3 and everything, but I'm really beginning to get irked with Sony's warranty and replacement policy... If anything happens to be defective in a $400-$600 piece of equipment in the 3 year period after purchase, Sony really should step up and replace the unit for free. The Bluray drive, especially, is rather worrying... The failure rate is low right now, but what if large numbers start failing in a year or so? One would have to hope that Sony would respond with a free replacement plan regardless of warranty status, but under the current policy it would cost almost half of a new PS3 just to fix a stupid drive... Irritating.

i too am having problems with my fiance's ps3. me and the sis in law were watching "the runaways" about a fourth of the way through it freezes. i couldnt turn it off like i would normally have to, i had to flip the switch in the back. when i turned it back on it didnt read the disk. i had to turn it off again, turn it back on and reinsert the movie. when i started the movie back where we left off it was fine for about 30 minutes then froze again. this happened about another 6 times before i gave up. when my fiance came home from work he tried several others and the ps3 wouldnt even play them. he is now playing a game without a problem so far. whats going on?? what can we do to fix the problem?? is anyone having this issue????

Yep, this happened to mine too. I used it as an excuse to upgrade to a slim. So I still have a broken PS3 in my closet, I should probably sell that thing on Ebay. (Yes, people buy broken consoles on Ebay, so there's nothing deceptive about it.)

Not really, you only see a tiny fraction of the playstations getting the rrod its just that you read it so often on forums you think its happening all the time, like a doctor, who thinks everyone is sick just because he meets those people everyday.
