HELP! My ps3 isn't reading the disc!

i was playing mgs4 when in the middle of the game i can't move snake anymore and in the left corner the disc icon with a question mark appears. So i turn the ps3 on and off and when i go to games its not reading the mgs4 disc, and i tried my nba game too and its still not reading it. u just see the loading bubble at the top right corner but its not reading the discs. anyone know whats wrong or how i can fix it?justifythegame

It doesn't sound good. You might be one of the few to get a bad BD drive.

and they tried to help me but they couldnt. They sent me a brand new PS3. I suggest calling SONY

Sigh this is happening more and more and more. I just sent in my old ps3 to best buy and they gave me a new 80gb. But the EXACT same thing happened to me.

did you get a best buy warranty or something? or they just replaced it? i bought mine from circuit city.

Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least they acknowledged their failure and gave a warranty appropriate with the problem. The 1 year PS3 warranty is a joke. Absolute joke given the quality of the 80gb/40gb and even the 60gb it seems. It should at least be a 2 year deal.

This seems to be a growing problem several of my friends(friends that live near me) have had problems with there ps3's and 3 of them have had to have them replaced while the other 2 managed to get the disc reading again but sometimes it takes several tries to get the ps3 to read the disc, also a few of my online friends have had to have there ps3 replaced at a steep price.

My warrenty runs out in august so im a little worried about disc read errors especially when i hear people being charged £100 for a repaired ps3 which is a steep price IMO, Sony take a loss on there consoles so they should take a loss on there repairs i paid £425($850) for my 60gb PS3 and i think paying another £100($200) to have it fixed when its there part thats faulty is annoying especially since there touting this 10 year life span surely when they built these PS3's they had that 10 year plan in my mind in terms of components life.

I wouldnt mind paying £50($100) at most and i expect some faulty consoles to be put into circulation its happened since the begaining of games consoles so i wouldnt mind paying a reasonable price for a repair, i probably wouldnt mind paying £100 to have it fixed it it broke after 3-4 years but not 12-18 months.

Oh well theres nothing we can really do, if we want to play we have to pay and i will pay or buy a new system just like i did with ps2/ps/360/snes etc etc etc.

Hopefully this wont become a grwoing trend.

i called them, the guy was like do you have a credit card we will fix it or send u a refurb for $150 just like you guys said. i just hung up. so i guess i'm giving up and there goes my ps3. pretty depressed right now. i'm not working anymore and just cant afford to spend another 150 just to play for a month ( i have to start pharmacy school july 28 ). and what if this crap happens in 2 years again? its not worth it. screw sony. i was pretty loyal, my ps1 and ps2 never had problems. i buy the system on launch paying a rediculous 599 like an idiot fanboy and this is the thanks i get. im not giving them anymore of my money. thats it. man... i really wanted to play mgs4.. been waiting so long to finally play it and this happens.justifythegame

At the moment there's really no other options since i hear(im not sure just something i have heard) the disc read errors stem from the blu-ray diode and its sonys tech(developer in collab with another company i forget which) so if it needs replaced only sony will be able to get that specific diode for ps3.

Its definitly bad news and a terrible price for a repair as its not your fault that your ps3 diode was faulty, sony touted this 10 year plan yet there seems to be a growing problem with disc read error less than 2 years into its life cycle.

These are problems i expected and everybody should have, new consoles always have "teething" problems every system has them, its new tech most the time(im looking at you wii) so its impossible to forsee these incidents its somehting thats happened since the start of gaming consoles, and i expected problems somewhere along the line with my ps3 (i hope its not a for a few years yet) but its a rather steep repair price.

Bad timing just when PS3 is really coming into its own, bascily your options are pay the price, sell it on ebay for cheap, or wait and see if this problem increases making sony extend warrentys(i wouldnt expect this as ps3 seems like a reliable consoles so far), wait for component costs to go down meaning repair costs will go down also(well they should), thats really your only options i can think of.

yeah making 6 figures in 4 YEARS if i get out successfully. BTW pharm school isn't free, its only $110,000 plus 9% on interest. then working to pay off loans.... yep guess that makes me rich now.

If my ps3 broke on me, sure i'd be down but 150 bucks is a small price to pay for all the features the ps3 offers.

So what's another 150 bucks if your gonna be in the hole over 100,000? My brother is in pharmacy school and is taking out loans like crazy too. He's actually pulled out additional loans to pay for his apartment and car so he could focus in school. SO that could be your solution right there, just take out another loan

yeah thats exactly what i was thinking... but there aren't really places i've noticed that say "we repair ps3s". that would be awesome if i found someone who could do that though.

He's actually pulled out additional loans to pay for his apartment and car so he could focus in school. SO that could be your solution right there, just take out another loan

I'm not talking about an entirely different loan, but a request for an all-purpose additional amount from your financial aid/loan application that will be applied to your school loan. Like i said eariler, i gonna be a nurse, not finance expert, but i have a brother and several friends who have been approved for additional amounts on their loans to cover expenses for apartments, books, clothes, etc.

Yes, MGS4 has now killed both of my PS3s. The first was six months old and had been used heavily. The second was just out of the box and never used for anything else. The first is on it's way back from Mexico right now and I guess the second will be on it's way to Mexico shortly. I can't believe more people are not seeing this issue. Both of mine were 40gb versions. I think MSG4 taxes the system resources more than any other game. One thing I noticed was that it took forever to save MGS4 during a BBE run while also downloading demos at the same time...something I never had a problem with before.

I really suggest sending SONY an e-mail or something and really get loose... dot curse tho but get MAD hopefully they will make an exception if not then just sell old stuff you dont need and pay the $150 there is really nothing else you can do... it sucks i know but there is really nothing more you can do :SKy0z

Lol samething happened to me as well, i was playing rainbow six v2, 4 player online co-op, then it just freezed, i became so close in beating mgs4 i think, i was on act 3 and a half :P

Alright its crap that the PS3 isnt reading discs, but is there any need to throw toys out of the pram blaming SONY and claiming that they dont care and that sort of rubbish? (answer is NO)

And as for someone comparing this to the 360 Red Ring of Death thats ridiculous! the 360's problem is likely due to the graphics processor causing system problems its practically an inherent fault and THATS why they offer a special warranty on that specific problem.

justify, I'm in the exact same boat as you. I've sent Sony a couple of emails, explaing my situation and they've forwarded my issue to management, still waiting on a reply. After going through 4 PS2s due to Disc Read Errors, I absolutely refuse to pay $150 to get this thing repaired after camping out for it and spending $600. If they won't fix it, I'll be selling it for parts, along with all 150 of my playstation games. Sad considering I've been buying Sony products for 10 years.---SLUG---
