i'm torn between the 40gb and 80gb.

i wanted an 80gb initially, but the 40gb from dell right now is very appealing.

so here's the differences i know about.

(1) FLASH READER

80gb - has flash readers

40gb - has none, but i'm thinking i can just pick up some cheap one and connect it to a usb port. so hence i could have this feature too for an additional 10 bucks lets say.

(2) SACD

80gb - wikipedia says it plays SACD

40gb - doesn't. i don't even know what the hell SACD is. (super audio? wtf) 40gb can play regular DVDs, CDs, CD-RWs, DVD-/+Rs? correct?

(3) PS2 COMPATIBILITY

80gb - yes

40gb - no. but i guess i could just keep my ps2 still. THOUGH im curious if the PS3 improves PS2 games on it? are the graphics better on it? is it way faster load times?

(4) USB PORTS

80gb - has 4

40gb - has 2. now this is pretty important to me. are the usb ports' main purpose for the controllers? i was told that all controllers are wireless, so that means the usb ports are just for random things. not necessarily the controllers?

i was under the impression that the ports are for the controllers. so saying 2 usb ports meant to me that only 2 controllers could be used for the 40gb UNLESS i purchased a MULTITAP. is that **** all history now?

that's all for now. hope you guys could help me out.

1. Unless you transfer a lot of media via flash memory card this is probably a non-issue. If it is, just pick up a USB card reader or go with the 80GB.

2. If you don't know what it means then it is probably unimportant in the decision making process.

3. The PS3 does slightly improve the graphics of some games that I've seen. I have a 60GB, so I may not be qualified to speak to this point.

4. The USB ports are only used to charge controllers or connect other USB devices. So two ports isn't that big of a deal. You can always get a 4-port hub if you need more, anyway.

Don't forget, the 80gb model comes with Motorstorm. The 40gb model comes with Spider-Man on Blu-Ray. Personally I think that the 80gb is the better deal simply because of the $60 game in the box and the extra 40gb of HDD space.

FLASH DRIVES WORK JUST AS WELL AND THEY CAN BE PLUGGED INTO THE USB SLOTS

(2) SACD

80gb - wikipedia says it plays SACD

40gb - doesn't. i don't even know what the hell SACD is. (super audio? wtf) 40gb can play regular DVDs, CDs, CD-RWs, DVD-/+Rs? correct?

YES IT DOES, AND THE 40 PROBABLY HAS SACD ASWELL SEEING THAT THE MODELS ARE BASICALLY IDENTICAL

(3) PS2 COMPATIBILITY

80gb - yes

40gb - no. but i guess i could just keep my ps2 still. THOUGH im curious if the PS3 improves PS2 games on it? are the graphics better on it? is it way faster load times?

SOMETIMES THE GRAPHICS LOOK BETTER THAN ON THE PS2 DUE TO THE UPSCALING

(4) USB PORTS

80gb - has 4

40gb - has 2. now this is pretty important to me. are the usb ports' main purpose for the controllers? i was told that all controllers are wireless, so that means the usb ports are just for random things. not necessarily the controllers?

CONTROLLERS ARE WIRELESS BLUETOOTH, USB SLOTS ARE ONLY TO CHARGE THE CONTROLLERS
BASICALLY ANYTHING THAT CAN BE CONNECTED VIA USB CAN BE CONNECTED VIA USB TO THE PS3 USB SLOTS

i was under the impression that the ports are for the controllers. so saying 2 usb ports meant to me that only 2 controllers could be used for the 40gb UNLESS i purchased a MULTITAP. is that **** all history now?

MULTITAP IS DUNNZO, 7 CONTROLLERS WIRELESSLY TO PS3 THANKS TO BLUETOOTH

that's all for now. hope you guys could help me out.

FYI...you say that the models are identical, but they aren't. The motherboard configuration between the 40gb and 80gb is completely different. If they were identical the 40gb would have b/c.

I dont know what kind of deals you guys are getting south of teh border today but dell has the 40 gig with ratchet and clacnk, + hdmi cable for 369 so its a pretty good deal i think and i grabbed it yesturday. They say it will ship around the 27th which is tomorrow. NO idea how long it will take after that. I tink the only real difference that people need to be concerned with is a lack of backward compatibility in the 40 gig but for poeple like me that makes no difference as I have no PS2 anyways... PSWii here

hence the keyword "BASICALLY" meaning that all will have same graphics and most inards but there will be some changes

Disregard the Hard Drive Capacity since you can switch it out yourself for a larger one. Sony even provides instructions on how to do it with the system. You can use a normal Hard Drive like the ones used in PC's. Or you can even connect an external Hard Drive instead if you so choose to. I didn't take any chances and I bought a 60GB simply for the Wi-Fi Connection, Full Backwards Compatibility, and all of the ports for connecting various memeory cards. I have two Digital Cameras with SD cards so those are useful to me. I do also prefer not having the controller wires running across the floor when playing my PS1 and PS2 games so the PS3 has become my gaming center. I still have both my PS1 and PS2 but they sit in their original packaging for the day when they'll be collectors items.
