help needed: god of war swimming

anybody ever had trouble swimming in god of war? i can't dive in at all. square doesn't seem to work. help will greatly appriciated. thanks

You can't dive until you acquire a certain item in the game.

they should have really written it down about the lance in some manual somewhere
