for the sound, you can use the standard RYW cord and have that run sound into your computer somehow and have the HDMI just do video. I run mine that way on the TV so I still have the PS3 hooked up to the stereo.

ive been thinking about doing this for a while

HDMI does carry sound (quite well) so you dont need to worry about that

Well I don't know how your going to hook it upwithout unplugging your computer but for sound I used the composite cable the PS3 came with and plugged one of the audio cords (red or white) into the audio port in my monitor. I have an HP w1907 19" widescreen and I don't know if it's just me but some of the games look like crap on it. I play in 720p but some games like COD4 and almost all the demos look very jaggy and/or blurry on it. Also, all PS2 games look like total crap on it. Don't know if you'll experience that but on the plus side some games did look pretty darn good and HD like Warhawk.

Yeah but this is an HDMI to DVI cable we're talking about. You can't have sound with these.

i have a 19" viewsonic and it looks darn good with hdmi to dvi. for sound go to display settigs and after setting system to use hdmi set the sound to use the white and red cable. now if you have speakers on your moniter you can buy an audio converter that where you plug the red and white on one end and the other end has the port for the pc. try to check fry's for the device i got mine when i bought the vga cable for the 360. or you can connect the red and white cables to a shelf stereo that has audio inputs. hope this helps

I use normal AV inputs to connect my Wii to my laptop. I am planning on getting a PS3 someday soon, but here's how I connect my Wii perfectly to my laptop monitor with sound, for ~$20-$30 (and definitely works):

Adaptec Gamebridge 1400: $20

http://www.amazon.com/Gamebridge-AVC-1400-USB-Cnct-Xbox/dp/B000DLBAFU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1196490631&sr=8-2

Or, for $30 and with a TV Tuner as well,

Adaptec GameBridge 1410

http://www.amazon.com/Gamebridge-AVC-1400-USB-Cnct-Xbox/dp/B000DLBAFU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1196490631&sr=8-2

Tell me if this helped and which one you picked. I have a 1400 by the way.
