I just bought a ps3 (80 gb fat version) and have been downloading demos and stuff to figure out what I want to go buy. Thing is, after I fire up a demo and play it for 5-10 minutes, the fans on my system go CRAZY...like super loud. I don't think my 360 has ever gotten that loud, and those are regarded as being a lot louder than ps3's.

I have it standing vertical with decent amount of breathing space, I was just wondering if this is normal for the older ps3's or if I may be an exception. Its annoying having to turn the TV volume up just to drain out the fan noise.

Is there any measures I can take to help this, short of buying an intercooler or anything like that? If it helps, I believe my room where the ps3 is sitting is about 80 degrees or so - not sure how big of an impact that would have compared to a room that is a more reasonable 72 or so.

thanks!

You could try to get some of the dust out of it, that will make it run cooler and in turn make the fans run quieter.

Just use some compressed air, or a vacuum cleaner.

Or a Can of Air would help. :D

hmm I guess I could try those things, I just figured since it was new it wouldn't have an issue with dust - I looked through the vents on the front of it and can only see clean, shiny things which didn't look dusty at all, but who knows

Fat PS3's are LOUD. The Slims are drastically more quiet.

Apparently they must be...about 20 min ago I was just surfing around the cross bar thing (home screen) without even playing anything and the ps3 took off like a jet engine. I felt near the back of the console, it was pumping hot air out like a **** - is that normal to be producing THAT much heat?

Uhhh, he did say he just bought it, right? What dust could there be??

The fans on the fats are loud - there have been several posts about this. More intense games, louder fans, etc. It's not a big deal. My question is: Why would you buy an older version fat when you could have bought the slim? If it is a price difference, then there you go - you get what you pay for. My fat has had the fan start-up noise since day one, it's louder on certain games.

The local Micro Center has a misprint in their ad for 80gb PS3's for $110 and they ended up honoring their own price mistake...I was able to score one, otherwise I probably would not have been able to put down $250-300. Anyways, I just thought it was odd that the fans start cranking when I'm just browsing the store or playing a demo. But I remember the older 360's used to have jet engines for fans too.
