Help..Blu-ray movies do not fill up entire screen?!

i know what widescreen is, but the movies dont even look hd w/ those bars. When i look at hd movies on tv w/o the bars, it looks amazing! So will all blu-ray movies i buy look like this?jzackt

Don't look HD? Is your screen only like 13" or something? The only thing the letterboxing does is preserve the movies theatrical ratio. The resolution is not any less because there are black bars at the top and bottom...

hahaha you dont know anything about aspect ratio. the black bars make it look like regular dvds....hahahahhaha

I just got a ps3 and ive tried a few blu-ray movies w/ my 226bw monitor. The problem is the movies have those black bars at the top and bottom making it look like a regular dvd. My monitor can go up to 720p. Is there any way I can make these movies fill up the entire screen so that it actually looks high definition? Thanksjzackt

bc that monitor is 16:10, so since your movies are 16:9 there will be the extra space

well my games are 16:9, but they dont have the black bars

I really dont see whats so funny about that. When i put a regular dvd in, it really doesnt look any worse than a blu-ray. My games have a much better picture because they fill up the entire screen.

games fill up the screen bc they are NOT made in a specific aspect ratio (length/width ratio) Look at the back of the box of the movie if it says 16;9 ration it will fill up a tv screen that is 16;9, ur monitor im assuming is small and is not widescreen so it wont look that much different then a dvd. Even if ur monitor or hdtv is widescreen u will still c black bars with most movies bc most movies are filmed in 1.85;1 ratio which is "wider" then 16;9 ration tv

Read and learn. The movies that you are watching are "scope" and that's why they have black bars. Put in a movie that is "flat" and the bars are not there. This is all dependant on the film makers decisions.

I take u have not even read the previous post. I know what widescreen is, thats why i specifically bought a widescreen monitor. I just want to know if there is a setting to get my blu-ray movies to fill up the entire screen just like my games bc I believe it looks better that way.

Dude Dude Dude! There's prolly no diff. between your dvds and your blu-rays b/c your monitor might be 720p or even less and Blu-Rays play on 1080P, if these two #s dont match you wont see much diff. between a dvd and a Bluray, buy a 1080p monitor right now and go see the diff. and for the black bars, try watching Resident Evil or The MIST, or Fast and the Furious movie and the screen will be completely filled but for movies with 16:9 ratio you will always get black bars no matter wht you do, sometimes it sucks but its for the better of it so there u have it. i have a similar question as the original post. y are all of my games off center? everything on the screen is moved to the left about 3 inches (52" screen) it cuts off a lot of stuff. its not the tv because it only does it to the ps3 stuff. but what i really find weird is that i DONT have a black edge. seems that if the whole image was off by that much i would get a black bar down the right side, right?

You would get Pillar Bars, or vertical bars on the left and right of the screen. You stretch the image if you wanted it to fill the screen, otherwise you'd have to deal with the bars.

i have a 1080p TV and i still have black bars on every single bluray i own. and if you cannot see the difference between bluray and dvd, man you are blind as a bat.

full screen on left, wide screen on right... thats all i need to say.. you know which one REALLY looks better
