Here lies Lair.(R.I.P. thread)

What could I say about Lair? It was one the reasons I got a PS3, not my main reason but a good one. It had a lot of potential to be a great game especially since it was in the hands of the team who did the Rogue Squadron series. It had such great previews and hands-on experiences from many gaming websites. Heck, even G4 liked the game when they played it at TGS. But now, after many reviews it has come to the conclusion that Lair is a bad game. Some people keep saying to wait for GS and IGN's reviews but we just need to accept that Lair isn't good. Does that mean the PS3 will fail? No. Does that mean that the PS3 will never have good games? **** NO, especially with our newest game Warhawk. Games will come and go, some will be good some will be bad. In this case, Lair happens to be a bad game. So now we just need to let it go, stop being in denial, and just let Lair die. We need to show the industry that we won't buy crap games or else they'll keep making them and more disapointment will follow. So now I say, good-bye Lair. You will be remembered as something that could've been great but couldn't be. Any other last words?

Oh and btw, I'm not a troll. In fact I own a PS3 and the other PS systems as well.

thank you. if everyone were like thomas here and made up thier own freakin minds, we wouldnt have lame threads like this. go to the lair board and see what the people that have it say. 90% of them say the controls are easy to learn and amazingly fun. the other 10% said they had a rocky start and are still learning, but they think theyll get it.

the original poster made the best point of all. if we buy games like this one, then theyll keep making them. If sony never hyped lair like they did, and not too many people had heard of it, everyone would steer clear of of it based on its reviews. People want this game to be good so badly that theyll ignore all the reviews, but when it comesdown to it, no one gave it a good review. Im gonna rent it, cause the campaign is only 6-8 hours, and id never buy a game that short.it will most likelykeep my atention for a saturday.

I mean hell Skies Of Arcadia they gave it a 7.5(GS)me I love that game and gave it a 10. Why? Because I love that game one of the best RPG's Ihaveever played and one of the only RPG's that I have beaten multiple times(and is the only reason my Gamecube is still around). So don't immediatly give up on it.

It sounds like you haven't played Lair and are basing your post on the opinions of reviewers. I own the game and I can tell you, it is not as bad as the reviewers would have you believe. it's actually pretty good. I'm very early into the game, but so far its been nice.

the reason why Lair got bad reviews is because its a Japanese game. As we will see in the next year or two games are going to be VERY different. Hands down what sells well in Japan doesn't always sell well abroad. For example, every kid with PSP plays monster hunter in Japan. Hardly anyone plays Gears of War here. So that's "probably" why Lair got reemed, it's because its a game that caters to Japan gamers rather than non-Japanese gamers. Lastly, in general flashy pretty games (with a fantasy like setting) or abstract "spooky" games generaly do well here (in Japan).arangadillo

As for the original topic, why even mention the PS3 failing or possibly not having good games due to the fact you, and other think Lair sucks? Just thought that was odd.

Thank you for the encouraging words BUT most of us here don't need it.Your words will be helpful to people who bought their Ps3(VERY VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE) just for Lair. Most of us Ps3 owners are mature enough to know that one bad game won't mean the end of system who's installed base is slowly but surely growing:). But here's what's funny....I still might get the game anyway...I don't let reviews effect my decision, I can think for myself.

the TS has it's points, but i myself felt Lair was way underated by IGN, to me, although i've not played the game yet and only heard comments from those who had played, i think it's a 6.5 rating.

but hey if the game was really 6 hours long, then it'll only be worth renting. Myself, i've never liked offline only games, it's pretty much buy, play and sell. well since im budget tight, i'll consider warhawk over this.

Anyone who had seen the gameplay vids, or read the hands-onpreviews about the gameplay should've known the game looked broken and not fun. Sure it's a graphical showcase for the PS3, but the dragon flying and combat never looked fun. and taking out hundreds of foot soldiers just by running over them looked even more ridiculous.

My point is that if you actually read the hands-on previews and the paragraphs about the gameplay, you definitely would've known the high and low points of the game. hell, if you just had watched the gameplay vids without a whole shot of optimism, you would've seen all the things the reviewers are talking about. It is NOT a surprise that this game is getting such sh*tty reviews.

I am not gonna tell you to try the game out, give it a rental since you initially liked it so much. I am not gonna do that because your overly preachy original post was annoying to read and I really dont wanna make the same mistake.

Yeah, I'll just wait for a demo before i decide not to buy it. Really, from the mixed reviews, Lair isn't necessarily a bad game, but one you either really like or one you really hate, the controls seems to be deciding that. Besides, a review is someone else's opinion of a game being passed off as important, I'll formulate my own opinion by playing a demo. Shaqneel

Mixed reviews? I dunno how scores ranging from 3.5-7.5 constitutes giving a game a second chance. I've been getting bashed by all the PS3 fanboys for the past few months for saying that this game is going to suck solely because SIXAXIS sucks that much. I'm just glad this game came out and will finally keep other developers from even trying to use SIXAXIS controls.

A rent for me. It got 4.9 on IGN. If it turns out that I agree, I'll buy it.

Why would the failure of an anticipated title mean the death of a console? Look at Blue Dragon, it was the game making x360 fanboys say that they didn't need a FF and it turned out with a 6 from gamespot. Red Steel on the Wii was very anticipated, and it turned out to suck plainly.

The failure of Lair won't hurt the PS3. Personnally, I never cared about it. But the failure of truly anticipated games could really affect the sales of a console. If MGS4 turns out with a 5 on about every websites, the PS3 sales would take a major hit. But seriously, it would never happen. :P

I bought the game yesterday and I must say that the reviewers are extremely harsh. This game is so far so good. The controls aren't as hard or bad as they say. Yes you have to get used to them but thats how it is with every game. I am currently enjoying this game and take it from me either rent it, or wait until a demo is released and judge the game FOR YOURSELF. There are games that I own that have gotten bad reviews but I have enjoyed the game nonetheless. We are in a time where reviewers are nit picking everything. Again I stress rent the game or wait for a demo and judge the game FOR YOURSELF. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have thus far.

It's funny but I keep saying the same thing. So far, I was right on the money with games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Warhawk.

Killzone 2 could prove me wrong though. And I have a fairly good feeling that game will not disappoint in the long run.

Reviews are indeed personal opinions and one should not look at the final review score but rather read a thoughtful review on the pors and cons of the game. So it'll turn out that one guys 7/10 is another's 9/10 and great game. However, rare is a game as polarized as this. Anytime I see a 4.9/10 or 5.5/10 review from a reputable review site it is going to give me pause and it likely means that game is at best a rental. When I see that type of review from IGN or Gamespot I tend to believe it.

These are the reviews IGN has listed for Lair:

two over 7/10, most 6/10 or lower. one 9/10 that isn't online from what i can see. It does seem to sum up to a mediocre at best game, and likely bad.
