Well, you could always go with the larger version of the HDD that's already in the PS3. It's a Seagate Momentus with 160GB of HDD goodness at the low low price of LESS than $125!!($124.99) Sorry. But anyway, yeah, that should work.

Here you go.

You need a 2.5" SATA HDD (it's laptop size, 3.5" won't fit as it is standard HDD size for PC cases)
Stick with Seagate, Maxtor or Western Digital for brand names, top 3 brands and reliable.

As for prices, if your in the USA then www.newegg.com or even eBay. Canada, www.tigerdirect.ca. Australia, www.scorptec.com.

Hope you find a good one.

Partially right, Windows XP won't let you format a fat32 drive beyond 32gigs.  Partition Magic will allow you to format a fat32 drive... mine is 200gb and it goes that high at least. I've heard of 300gb drives formatted in fat 32 as well.

How does this Partition Magic work, Wikipedia says its a program on XP but how do I plugin a Laptop HDD on my desktop, also i think 160 GB is big enough and I just found that  seagate momentus at newegg.com.  I hope I don't have to format that  thing since it is over 120 GB.

I would go with an external harddrive. I have a 250gb external harddrive made by Western Digital hooked up to my PS3. It cost me 100 bucks. Plus the 60gbs already in the PS3 I won't have to worry about space for a very long time.

That sounds like a good idea. When I fill up my 60GB HD, I think I'll pick up an external HD. Sony just needs to release more downloadable games so I have something to fill it up with!

for the internal HDD, you won't need to format it before using it. The PS3 will automatically format the drive when it's inserted.

I was gonna start a new topic but maybe some of you guys know about this.  I'm no dummy when it comes to hard drives so keep that in mind when responding.  I have a 3.5'' 250gig in an external case that allows both USB and eSATA/SATA connection.  Problem is I formatted it NFST since that was before PS3 came out and it recommended NFST for the drive.

The question is say I swap out the 60gig and use the eSATA connection to connect right into the SATA connection in the bay (and don't tell me it won't work cause that's a load of crap...there'a a video on youtube of someone who's done it and it all makes sense logically) will the PS3 reformat over the NFST to whatever it needs to run with the PS3.

I'm considering a LINUX install and I don't really use that 250 for anything so right now its taking up space.

BINGO! This is much better then replacing the original drive. Plus, you don't void the factory warranty this way.

you know, that could work. as long as you use the SATA connection, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try and see. The worst that could happen is the PS3 wouldn't be able to read it. If the PS3 can read it, it will format it.

you won't void your warranty if you replace the internal HDD. and with external HDDs, you can't save directly to them. You will still be required to save everything to the internal HDD, then move the stuff to the external HDD.

go with the 5400rpm...its cheaper. You could go with the 7200rpm but it more expensive and you won't see any performance gains. so it's pretty much useless to buy anything other than a 5400rpm drive.

I know it will definately work.  I'll have to keep the bay cover off but thats not a huge problem and if I really wanted to I could modify the bay cover (altho I wont lol).  I just wasnt sure if it would reformat it over the old format.

yes, it will reformat it. once you put the new drive in and boot up the PS3, it will recognize the new drive and tell you that it is going to reformat it.

cool cool thanks.  If I ever do decide to do it, i'll be sure to post a pic of the setup since I'm a clean freak and a perfectionist to show you just how good someone can make it look. :)
