has anybody upgraded there 60GB HDD to anything higher because I'm planning on doing it also? I know that it takes a SATA model but was wondering what you guys put in it like how much GB? how much $? What brand name? Heck the name of the HDD? Thanks if you respond to this.Dio1080
hi...u can change the standard 60 gig hdd for any laptop sata hdd, no matter the price or the name, the only thing u have to keep in mind is that the hdd has to be formated in fat32 i think(correct me if im wrong please), but fat will not let you format any hdd higher than 120 gigs, but download partition magic and you are set to go, with partition magic u can format any hdd on fat :D i think thats all...(i´m no expert on this, so correct me if i´m wrong please :) )

any laptop sata hardive will work read the manualÂ
Well, you could always go with the larger version of the HDD that's already in the PS3. It's a Seagate Momentus with 160GB of HDD goodness at the low low price of LESS than $125!!($124.99) Sorry. But anyway, yeah, that should work.
Here you go.
You need a 2.5" SATA HDD (it's laptop size, 3.5" won't fit as it is standard HDD size for PC cases)
Stick with Seagate, Maxtor or Western Digital for brand names, top 3 brands and reliable.
As for prices, if your in the USA then www.newegg.com or even eBay. Canada, www.tigerdirect.ca. Australia, www.scorptec.com.
Hope you find a good one.

Partially right, Windows XP won't let you format a fat32 drive beyond 32gigs. Partition Magic will allow you to format a fat32 drive... mine is 200gb and it goes that high at least. I've heard of 300gb drives formatted in fat 32 as well.
I would go with an external harddrive. I have a 250gb external harddrive made by Western Digital hooked up to my PS3. It cost me 100 bucks. Plus the 60gbs already in the PS3 I won't have to worry about space for a very long time.Mcortijo01
That sounds like a good idea. When I fill up my 60GB HD, I think I'll pick up an external HD. Sony just needs to release more downloadable games so I have something to fill it up with!

for the internal HDD, you won't need to format it before using it. The PS3 will automatically format the drive when it's inserted.[QUOTE="psyum"][QUOTE="Dio1080"]has anybody upgraded there 60GB HDD to anything higher because I'm planning on doing it also? The question is say I swap out the 60gig and use the eSATA connection to connect right into the SATA connection in the bay (and don't tell me it won't work cause that's a load of crap...there'a a video on youtube of someone who's done it and it all makes sense logically) will the PS3 reformat over the NFST to whatever it needs to run with the PS3. Â
I'm considering a LINUX install and I don't really use that 250 for anything so right now its taking up space.Â

BINGO! This is much better then replacing the original drive. Plus, you don't void the factory warranty this way.

you know, that could work. as long as you use the SATA connection, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try and see. The worst that could happen is the PS3 wouldn't be able to read it. If the PS3 can read it, it will format it.[QUOTE="Mcortijo01"]I would go with an external harddrive. I have a 250gb external harddrive made by Western Digital hooked up to my PS3. you won't void your warranty if you replace the internal HDD. and with external HDDs, you can't save directly to them. You will still be required to save everything to the internal HDD, then move the stuff to the external HDD.Any recommendations about HDD speed? I was wondering if heat may be a problem.jonkirstgo with the 5400rpm...its cheaper. You could go with the 7200rpm but it more expensive and you won't see any performance gains. so it's pretty much useless to buy anything other than a 5400rpm drive.

yes, it will reformat it. once you put the new drive in and boot up the PS3, it will recognize the new drive and tell you that it is going to reformat it.Please Log In to post.
