I'm only an hour into the game so it may get a little trickier later but I noticed there's a restart option when I pause a battle. It reminded me of Forza 3's rewind function. And then I took minute to think about all the recent games I bought and how pretty much all of them were laughably easy on all but the toughest modes, which usually required you to finish the game a few times. So why not just make it available from the start or at least up the difficulty to begin with? Are today's gamers just less skilled?

I've read that the game is quite easy up until a certain point so that it can help indoctrinate the player with the new battle system. Apparently after a certain point they hope you've grasped the whole thing and present you with more of a challenge.

Well I didn't get to play that one. Of course that's a bit more of a 'strategy' game than an RPG, right?

But I played the following in previous generations.

Final Fantasy on SNES

Secret of Mana on SNES

FF VII, VIII on the original PS1

FF X and FFXII on PS2

Dragon Quest VIII on PS2

Kingdom Hearts on PS2

All of these games I thought were exceptionally easy as far as the battles were concerned. Basically if you ran into an area where you had trouble, the solution was always to level up like crazy so you are always powerful enough for it to be easy. Games like those you might let your party die only a few times throughout the entire game, and I'm not even good at RPG's. Just always forced myself to level. I'm sure really good players never even needed to worry about that.

Well, you are only an hour into the game. I would bet that it does get harder, not by much. Also I have always found Final Fantasy games pretty linear so I can't imagine this one being too much different.

all FF games are linear since FFVII

they are THAT linear cuz u can go to different areas and stuff back when 7 8 and 9 had the world map and whatnot and u could do ur chocobo stuff or fly ur airship around to secret dungeons or fight secret GF battles in 8.. so.... idk where ur coming fro mthat they are linear but i can see how they are a lil linear.

but u cant expect every game to be like oblivion or fallout XD

All of these games I thought were exceptionally easy as far as the battles were concerned. Basically if you ran into an area where you had trouble, the solution was always to level up like crazy so you are always powerful enough for it to be easy. Games like those you might let your party die only a few times throughout the entire game, and I'm not even good at RPG's. Just always forced myself to level. I'm sure really good players never even needed to worry about that.

2Chalupas

from what i've seen you cant do that in FFXIII because the level up system is capped and only unlocks small bits at a time after you beat bosses and progess through the story.

Well, course its easy, its the start of the game.

But yeah, Mainstream games like this get easier and easier, with the exception of demon's souls.

Im expecting FF13 would get harder and harder.

Is there a harder difficulty setting available from the beginning? I always play on the hardest setting, except when it's already a pretty hard game like Ninja Gaiden, then I'll choose Normal. Not that I'm a glutton for punishment, I just like being challenged, and I like to boost my games' lenght a little bit too :P

My God, are you kidding me? FFX was THE most linear Final Fantasy game to date, there wasn't even a friggin overworld up until the last third of the game. Besides, side-quests don't mean non-linearity if they're optional. A non-linear game means you can do the required goals in pretty much the order you want to, à la Dragon Age, Oblivion or even Chrono Cross, to a certain extent. FFX was a straight line from start to finish.

Yeah no joke. FFX is one of my favorite games ever, if not my favorite, but the game doesn't allow you to do much how you want. You have to go to Kilika from Besaid, Luca from Kilika...ect. FFX-2 isn't hardly linear at all. Maybe he was thinking of that one?

He DID say Square Enix. Anyone who was a fan of Squaresoft knows that they were on a completely different developer back then. They released a clunker here and there, but the good stuff was really good.

Tactics is a SRPG. Different genre than FF13 and other "main" FF titles.
