I have a wireless connection so I really couldn't help you with any wired connections.

A router does make things easier and lets you keep your computer online at the same time (which comes in handy in case a question comes up you want a quick answer to).

Once you do get a router hooked up you may need to get certain information out of it to put into the PS3 settings (DNS servers, Subnet mask). try doing everything at Automatic first, though, you may be able to avoid doing much messing around. If you don't get online that way go back in and put the numbers I mention above alongwith the IP address of the router (that will be the numbers used to get to the router options on the computer) and try again.

First thing is first. Do you have/use a router?

Do you have broadband internet?

Do you have an account already set-up with Playstation.com?
