It doesn't really matter as long as you keep a good ventilation for the ps3. Try not to place your PS3 on the carpet horizontally though.

It doesnt matter.  The ps3 isnt made like a piece of crap.  People ask the best position for the other system because they want it to last as long as possible before getting the 3 lights or they are afraid if they knock it over that it will scratch their games.  BTW I even tested the ps3 and gently shook it while it was playing a game.  Just like the ps2 it is unfazed and just keeps chugging.

Got to be honest here, the PS2 did get effected in my experience when it came to positioning it right, some games would work some wouldn't. Now I'll this, I've taken a good look at a relatives PS3 (getting mine next week) and it is a very well built product and worthy of it's price. I personally didn't like the look of the PS2 at all but the Slimline was nice.

I have mine horizontal. It's on my TV rack and I don't want it vertical as 'cause if it got bumped, it could fall 4 feet.

I would think Vertical would be OK if you have it near the floor or where it can't get bumped.

Hmm my guess is that you needed the rail height on your ps2 laser adjusted?  I dunno......  But a fully functional ps2 isn't effected by movement.  I have literally picked up my old ps2 and started twirling it in circles like a plane propeller while it was running just to see if anything would happen.  And it just kept going as normal.  Of course I haven't tried this with my ps3.  Its too heavy. :)

I find the underside of my PS3 (on the right hand side) gets hot when it's led down, but stood up it stays nice and cool.  So, before I turn it on I stand it up.  Sorted.

Best way to place my PS3? Well that's gotta be horizontal coz I wouldn't be able to reach the disc drive if it was vertical. My PS3 is very high and I am not short (6', so that makes me an average size, right?), it's just the only place my PS3 fits. This topic is kinda weird y'know... Why would someone want to know the best way for my PS3? A little creepy, yet I answered.

Hey, at least you have the choice. With the Wii you can only have it vertical.

I've got my Wii horizontal (on top of my 360, no less!) and it works fine.  As for the PS3, definately horizontal.  Not only do I find it more difficult to slip discs into a vertically aligned drive (it's me, I know), but I shudder to think of the damage that would come to the PS3, not to mention any pets/children, if it were to tip over and fall.

Well I have mine horizontal as although it's a thicker unit than the 360 I still fear it falling over!

I keep it horizontal as well.

I have nightmares about it toppling over in the vertical position. :D

I am much more scared of having my PS3 vertical. I just lay it horizontal but the 360 I seem not to mind it vertcal. It doesnt bother me. Probably because the PS3 was more expensive and bigger. I don't want it to break.

I have an Xbox 360 and a PS3. The Xbox 360 I have placed vertically, and I have not had any discs scrached, and the console works fine. The PS3 I have had vertically as well, as the vertical position seems to ventilate the consoles better, and they also look better vertical:)

I know its a travesty, but mine is not only horizontal, but secreted away in a compartment in the handmade bar it resides on. It's a ... unique... setup.

are you serious? See those four feet on the right side (if you're looking at it) of the Wii? Those aren't there for decoration, it's too put your seystem horizontal.

As for my PS3 if you have it vertical all the heat comes out directly from the top, just like it should.

lol where did u get ur ps3?! i nvr once had it shake. and the 3 lights? u talking about a 360's red rings? idk not trying to make fun of your or anything just saying. and the PS3 has no disk tray like the 360 so u dont scratch ur games. i have Killzone 2 which ive been playing since it came out and there isnt a single scratch on it. and i got Oblivion and beat the campaign (100+ hours... yea it was a slow summer) and that dosnt have a single scratch. And how can u say it built like a pice of crap? Unlike the 360 which runs as hot as a freakin nuclear reactor which is the cause of the red rings of death (Microsoft uses crappy soder which melts and thus u got the red rings). My Ps3 has nvr giving me a single problem but once where it froze in the online browser. but just looking for feed back not trying to insult u or anything...

Mine stays vertical for a few reasons. It saves space, for one. We don't have a lot of room just yet, so any console that can safely play in a vertical position is left that way. The ventilation system blows out of the end that faces upward and helps prevent overheating. Ours used to have problems after about 4-5 hours of game play until we turned it on end and now it can go nearly an entire day continuously (not a good idea, I know) without a problem. It doesn't have the disk reader problems that the older model 360's have. When using a tray system, you can't put the system vertical safely. The slightest movement while it's reading a disk can ruin the disk if it wobbles. The slide in readers keep the disk in place in case the system wobbles during play. Those who think it isn't stable when placed vertically, the base is wide enough to be stable. I've only seen one wobble when the surface under it was bumped hard enough to wobble the TV. Either way, it works just fine so it really just depends on which look you prefer.

I keep my systems horizontal for safety reasons. my other system was vertical for a moment and fell over, killing the game inside.

There you go, broski. Talking about the 360, not the PS3. And, back on topic of the thread, horizontal all the way, I don't want it to fall over.

Horizontal, because I keep all my consoles on a row of shelves and that's just how it fits. Plus I don't have to worry about it getting bumped.

I like the slim ps3 to be vertical because I think it looks better and it saves me space. I highly suggest that people get the SONY slim ps3 stand though because it LOCKS on and stands much more firmly than the cheap stands. Even though slim ps3 stands without a stand, it easily tips over and I won't risk that.

It should be horizontal, people have done tests and proven that the system remains cooler that way.

I alwyas have placed my PS3 Horizontal. I have the Playstation 3 60GB (Which is supposedly prone to overheating) and the 120GB PS3 Slim. (Which supposedly doesn't get the YLOD)

Both still work perfectly and have not given me any trouble or died. So I would say place your PS3 Horizontal

After having my PS3 give me the YLOD (and having it fixed) It starts to overheat Vertically, so I put it horizontally and no overheating happens.

It makes no difference. As long as it gets plenty of room to breath it will be a happy console either way.

I have it horizontal. If anything disturbs my entertainment stand or I try to hurry through cleaning/dusting, there's less chance of me knocking it over and causing dangerous.

Speaking of this, where would I find an official stand for my superslim (CECH-4000)?  There's only a 3rd party one on Amazon, and I'm scared to go with anything other than the official base.
