I see people keep asking this randomly so I thought a thread for just this problem with the answer might help. I rang PSN UK customer support this morning and they told me that hotmail users are the majorty of users who are having troubles getting the PS3 E-Mail requests to reset their passwords. This has been confirmed by other sources as well so there is a thread on the hotmail forums BEING IGNORED by the staff there but were still posting on it in an attempt to get an e-mail so join us if your having the problem *Click*

You can also e-mail hotmail support directly and I am trying to get people to contact gaming websites to see if they will follow and reportthis story about hotmail. It does seem odd Hotmail owned by rival Microsoft are having this issue and while I don't think they caused it on purpose they clearly DO NOT seem bothered to fix it.

And to answer the post that will come up soon am sure about resetting your p/w at the console..."Not everyone can, some/alot of people will only get a message prompt directing us to our e-mail inbox to do it via email".

I don't really know why people like to jump to conclusions like you have here but I have a Hotmail E-mail account being used for my PSN and was able to change the password no problem. Maybe it has to do with the phase that your paticluar location is in. . . .

There are alot of people with hotmail not getting it and first thing said to me by PSN own customer support was you got hotmail? hotmail is the problem and we don't know why.M/S hotmail adminsare ignoring the hotmail forum thread about it while posting to the other threads around it so they clearly don't seem intent on helping the issue along or just giving us a update on the issue.

I have hotmail and I have always gotten my messages from Sony alright but I haven't downloaded the new update or reset my password yet since I was reading that the servers were getting so busy that the company is taking it's time going through the list of emails to make sure of the password reset.

There are a lot of people with a lot of email providers apparently not getting it. Just because there happens to be some people posting on hotmail's forum doesn't indicate that it's a bigger problem there than anywhere else or that they are specifically restricting that traffic, especially since some people on that forum are saying they did get it afterall. It could be indicative of the fact that Hotmail is a crap service.

Hotmail staff could answer us but won't they clearly are ignoring us so we will do what we can. I already know of people posting on other forums, e-mailing gaming press websites and consumer websites about the debacle. Long shot but worth a try to get the story traction.

Dude, I think you're right. For ppl that are saying they have hotmail and are able to get on PSN, you probably have the PS3 that you activated your account on. For ppl with hotmail accounts with ps3s that they DIDN'T activate their accounts on, are having a tough time. I'm about borderline of returning my new PS3 since it hasn't even been a month yet since I bought the new thing. Poor sony even on the verge of losing some valuable customers after they bring it back, if you're going to bring it back, bring it back to everyone dammit.

I read somewhere of some Sony exec saying something like "there are massive amounts of e-mail requested during these times. Please, if you already sent your first e-mail, do not request for more e-mails as this will only push your reset e-mail to take longer"

I got lucky and got the email for my one hotmail account but I can't get it for my brother's PSN. I quickly got it though for yahoo, so from now on if I make any more PSNs it's going to be with a yahoo email.

Plus also, don't expect MSN admins to help at all, their service is terrible. No one ever gets a solid answer.

I'm in the same position, still waiting for the email on my hotmail account. It's before 48 hours now since the email was supposedly sent. The annoying thing is that my PS3 is the one I set up my account on so I don't know why it wouldn't just let me change it on there.

After several hours and getting the story to be reported look like the members of that Hotmail thread have an answer...

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Hotmail customers who are having issues receiving Sony's password reset mails,

Thank you for reporting this issue so that we could investigate the situation. When Sony re-launched their online service and then Playstation users initiated password resets, Hotmail saw a dramatic, unexpected increase in mails sent from Sony. Unfortunately, these kinds of huge changes in volume are also one characteristic of an email server that has been compromised by spammers. Consequently, Hotmail temporarily refused delivery of emails from Sony's password reset servers as a defensive response to a potential spam attack.

We have been in discussions with Sony to identify the affected servers and are delighted to report that this issue should now be resolved. It may take a couple of hours for you to receive your password reset mail. If you do not receive your reset mail within a few hours, please request a new password from Sony.

Hotmail and Sony are actively monitoring this situation to help better ensure that all password reset requests go through as quickly as possible.

Thank you,

The information was posted in our Hotmail thread asking whats going off about 10 minutes before I posted that. I would say give it a few more hours then if not resend your request as probably your last one was blocked by Hotmail's spam security.

Being that I work in a dedicated/Managed hosting enviornment and have to deal with customer's email issues all day, I can tell you without a doubt that hotmail is the worst email system out there for trying to get emails into it. Consistenly the blacklist, remote queue, deny emails, throttle inbound, and are by far the strictest email system around. They are a thorn in my side, and most of the time it takes weeks to get customer's whitelisted on their system to get emails to flow easily. I would never use hotmail for anything in my book. Most people probably don't realize the amount of mail they don't receieve on their hotmail accounts that they should. Hotmail drives me and my customer's crazy with their strict policy. Even with spf records and domain keys they still will blacklist and keep you from sending into them rather easily.

Sorry to hear about people's problems with hotmail. I wouldn't say it's an conspiracy against sony and PSN, since their email has operated this way for over atleast over a decade and is indiscriminate on who it blocks and will not receive from. Their throttling and spam protection/rbl/bayesian filtering is just assinine over there.

Why on earth would you be redoing your password through email and not the ps3? Dude, all you do is change your pw on the ps3 and they send you a email saying it has been changed, if you did not do this click on link. So another words do not change your pw through a email.

This again...Right not everyone can change their password via the console some are told by Sony you CAN ONLY do it via thee-mail they send you.

Funny, I would've thought Yahoo accounts would have the most issues. Maybe it's due to how a significant number of accounts are Hotmail-based.
