Hi guys

I'm really interested in buying a PS3 and one of my main reasons for doing so is the excellent array of shooters coming to the system. I wanted to get some feedback before I did anything though

I've never played a shooter on the PS3 but I played a few on the PS2 and it was absolutely terrible. Bear in mind that I don't even like 360 controllers that much and the analogue sticks on those are pretty great

How bad are the analogues on the PS3 pad for shooters and is there any alternative availible?

They are great just like they always were for the ps2. An alteration is to go play on the PC if you dont like joysticks

You mean the tightness or lose? What else would it be. Anything else is how the game is developed. COD4 felt the same to me on the PS3 as it did the 360. As did other games feel different then COD4.

That was a stupid argument 60 Bots came up with way back in the Original X vs PS2 days. All BS.

The controller is great, good weight, sensitivity and feel. I always loved the ps controllers and the newest dualshocks do not dissapoint.

I'm sure there are third party options available, although they'll either be wired or use a USB wireless dongle.

The stock Dual Shock 3 pad is okay...although it does have the same issues as the Dual Shock 2 - short, poorly capped analog sticks and mushy shoulder buttons. Unfortunately, the triggers don't help much as they're (like the analog stick) curved in the wrong direction and way too loose.

You get used to it, though.

Dual 2 was better. But at least neither one is so dead in the middle. So dead, that my guy moves around any which way when you let go of the controller. And we know who owns the worst dead spot. Dual 2 had a vary stiff nice snap back. right to middle. Dual 3 is a tad weaker. Game cube Had the best analog ever, despite a cheap feeling controller overall. In fact the Gamecube Wireless "Wire Bird? Or whatever it was called." Was maybe the best feeling controller ever.

Yeah, the Gamecube's stick was great. Good length, nice grippy rubber top and the perfect feel as you yanked it around, and a nice snap back to the center when you let go. Sony should have copied the design, or at least borrowed part of it.

Its kinda like a steering wheel. You need to feel it fighting back some. And when you let go, you want it to snap back to the exact middle. I liked Dual 2 also. Dual 3 is not bad, but its a tad weaker then 2 was. They just need to make the analogs a tad stronger, like dual 2 again. And if they were as good as the Cubes, that would be fantastic.

It's not so bad. The 360 controller is better for FPS imo, but both pale in comparison to the M&KB

THEY ARE WAY BETTER no matter what anyone says. They've been raised so they have a way better range of motion, trust me the analog sticks are great now way better for shooters, even my friend who has a 360 when he plays my PS3 COD4 he doesn't have any problems.

I wish someone could take all the best designs for each component of the controller and slap them all together.

Mix the 360's analog sticks with the responsiveness of the Gamecube's, the 360's triggers, and the Dual Shock's dpad and face buttons. I'd be all over that controller.

I don't know about that. I am fine with the xbox ones but the acceleration, length of the sticks, or some thing throws me off with the ps 3's. I do find I am a bit better when playing Battlefield BC but for what reason I don't know.

well, up untill last year (thanks to 3rod) i was a big ms fan. i loved their controllers to death and always thought i'd have a huge problem going to a ps cotroller as i haven't really used one much since the ps1 era. low and behold i had zero problem adapting to the ps3 controller and actually favor it over the controller s for the original xbox and the360s fantastic controller. you'll be alright.

I totally disagree. I have the regular six axis and the Dual shock 3 (DS3), 2 of each. The DS3 returns to the middle at a dead spot when I am not moving. I have tried it on both FIFA and COD4. The sixaxis also does the same. The shoot buttons (shoulder buttons) work perfectly, aiming can be a burden but once u figure out that its the game design u will know not to crouch at impossible angles and expect to aim properly.

My friend is one of those mash happy guys and he wrecked his pads. His game pads have no caps on the analog sticks and his run button (R2) is broken or constantly on. This is what happens to people who get too emotional while playing. Pressure sensitivity has its limits! Its like driving a car. You could turn slightly with the steering wheel and also u could turn forcefully and ultimately rip the wheel off!

To the Topic creator. The DS3 and sixaxis are good, in my opinion. I prefer the DS3, it has a little weight and is nice to have shock back. I dont like the 360 pads because of where the analog sticks are (no fanboyism) but its also lovely once u get used to it. If people complain about the pads breaking easily or no dead middles its because they have misused the pads. I did this on my first sixaxis while playing COD4 cos of the run function (its the Left analog pressed down and forward). I accidently broke it with way too much force. now i have no dead middle on that pad.

Don't abuse your L3 if you're going to play CoD4.

Overtime the left analog stick will become "sticky" and won't return to the center, and it will be harder to move around.

Maybe if they had changed the sprint button to L2, people wouldn't have this problem...

I think its pretty good for shooters. But Im basically a console only gamer except for RTS games. But the PS3 controller is really easy to use for shooters. Its basically the same as the 360 controller, but I think it's smoother, because more PS3 shooters use the L1 and R1 buttons to shoot, which I really like.

Whoa, Blu? Never thought I would see the day you would say, "I'm interest in buying a PS3". jk.

I dont know of any alternates that are available, but I'll be honest... I can see the problem with the sticks people complain about sometime. Dont get me wrong, because they arent that bad, but sometimes on COD4 it felt like I couldnt tweek the stick enough to get the shot I wanted at times. That wasnt always the case, but it happens.

Anyway, that's my two cents. It's not terrible, but it's not as good as the 360. But, if you're good you'll be fine, if you stink, you'll stink for sure. lol.

The controller is really bad. Google search how to use 360 controller on PS3. you will find endless amounts of websites and people complaining about how terrible the PS3 controller's 11 year old design is. and wish they could use the 360 controller on there PS3. If you have Linux on your PS3, you can use a wired 360 controller with the right driver. You wont find anybody trying to use a PS3 controller on the xbox 360.

I prefer the 360 controller the PS3 controller is too small and my hands cramp from holding it, the analog sticks too close, my thumbs almost touch and with the R2 and L2 buttons angled down it feels like your fingers are slipping off them. I would have loved to have the boomerang controller, it was small despite what peeps think and it went with the flow of your hands, instead of being shaped like the letter H, which the PS3 controller is. Even with all the cons of the PS3 controller for me, with practice and patience you will adjust or go with off brand ones.

seriously you don't by a console for First Person Shooters, you would be handicapped and would never have the precision of a mouse and keyboard

NYC05, Im kind of shocked you appear to be a big guy with I would assume large hands. If I hold the PS3 controller as it should be, firmly in my hands with sides of the controller touching my palms, my thumbs touch and my fingers over lap R1 and L1. Even my friends with smaller hands find it too small.

As bad as any other console controller. Mouse + Keyboard is vastly superior. Shooters are still enjoyable, but if you have the option to buy shooters for the PC, do that.

People with kb + m can still get owned by a controller... the PS3 controller is the best gaming controller ever created. EVER. The new R1 + L1 trigger buttons are just like a guns. Plus wireless and tight...kick ass.

Wise words I think think the cotroller is cool, but really the default trigger button should be R2 like in GTAIV, i used the R2 as a trigger in Resistance and it handles just like Halo, and that the "best handeling FPS in a console". But really the controller is the you can find, what do you think it hasn't change since the original PlayStation? Well you have 2 analog stocks, motion sensing and rumble now, but the rest its the same. Its not too small, i have big hands and have no problem with it, its not too big cuz kids play with it really well, its not too light, i don't care what you say that thing is not too light, the other controllers are too heavy that you can say, but don't come with Sixaxis too light crap, and it doesn't feel like its gonna fly when you shake it in the air, never happaned to me and i shake it pretty wild. Last but not least, my Sixaxis have fall from a about 1,5m to a stone ground and it didn't broke and is still working fine, so....

Forget the whole controllers don't work for shooters thing!

That ended the day that COD2 came out for the Xbox 360. Try that game or any other major shooter for the 360 or PS3 (e.g. COD4) and you'll see that shooters created with 360 or PS3 controllers in mind work just as well as a mouse and keyboard.

As for the 360 vs. the PS3, the 360 controller is better (the left stick is in a much better position) but the difference is very minor.

I love the PS3 controls compared to the 360's. Besides that the R1 is the default fire which is easier that on the 360's, I hate that dip that the 360 has. On COD4 if I move the stick down or up too fast I end up pushing the controller in which make me knife randomly, unlike the PS3's where its convex no concave.

The 360 trigger is like...umm a trigger, what trigger have you seen that arches inwards, that's why it feels wrong to me, like your fingers are slipping off of the R2 button. I respect everyones opinions though, because that's what they all are but I would have been much happier with the boomerang controller, for those that hated it most didn't see it in somebodies hands to see the actual scale of it.

The "console controllers don't work for shooters" thing ended when Halo 1 hit the xbox...

People with kb + m can still get owned by a controller... the PS3 controller is the best gaming controller ever created. EVER. The new R1 + L1 trigger buttons are just like a guns. Plus wireless and tight...kick ass.

In an fps, anyone who is playing with a M&KB will OWN anyone with comparable skill who is using a PS3 or 360 controller.

Truth. Example Shadowrun, where they nerfed PC players so that the xbox'rs weren't utterly RAPED. It's not that controllers are bad for shooters, it's just that KB/Mouse is VASTLY superior.

The analog sticks work fine. But those triggers... my god. What the **** was Sony thinking? I ****ing hate the L2/R2 on the SUXAXIS and failshock3 that Sony releases. Why couldn't they ape the 360 and go with concave triggers so you can actually grip the damned things? I've since bought myself a revised Mad Catz PS3 controller that does have motion, rumble, and proper triggers. If I have to nitpick - and I do here - is that the only thing I don't like about this controller is that it can't turn on the system with a press of the Home button like the Sony brand one will. But compared to the alternative, I will much rather stick with this.

I'm fine with the analog sticks but I despise all 4 triggers.
