my hdd space ran out. so i wanted to install a 500 gb hdd. but before i do that, how do i back up all the game saves, including game demos and game data (the one which we have to install everytime before we play a new game.)????

all the files make up more than 50 gb. i have a 250 gb ntfs external hdd and a 30 gb fat32 ipod. but ps3 does not recognise ntfs file system. and the fat32 hdd is only 30 gb.

and is the firmware update and system preferences installed and saved in the system flash memory and not the internal hdd?

you know you can always format your external hdd to fat32, assuming you have nothing to lose in there....

I'm in the same situation. No, firmware and all that is on the internal HDD. The PS3 only recognizes FAT32 only but for some reason, it can't handle more than 30GB (as far as I understand) so we're screwed.

You'll have to back up whatever you can and just re-download and re-install all the games on the new HDD.

i heard ntfs can only be partiniioned to 30 gb maximum so it creates parts.. and i cant format the hdd beacuse i store all my films and music in it. is there any other work around? i guess i could delete a few demos to save space. but i dont want to install and update all my game again one by one. thank you for your help.

1)buy an external hard drive 2) connect external hard drive to ps3 3) select make back up from the xmb and back up your ps3 to the external hard drive. ( may take a while) 4) after it is done, replace old hard drive with new one and format it. 5) go to restore back up data from the xmb and select the external hard drive. then let it restore your data. 6) injoy your extra space :) * optionally, you could buy an external enclosure and use your new hard drive as the external one, but I never tried it.

The 32gig limit of fat32 is because of the windows drivers not the file system itself. I'm not sure if this is still the case in windows7 or vista, I certainly made a 100 gig fat32 partition on my mac and backed up my entire ps3 using the backup feature in system settings (demo's and installs too)

I'm sure there would be third party programs for windows to do it

False: FAT32 and PS3 only recognize 30gigs... thats completely not true. False: NTFS can only partition in sizes of 30 gigs, current harddrives of upto and exceeding 1.5 terabytes of information can be one partition. Even with space reductions from the formatting it still comes out to partitions well over a terabyte in size.

Allows creation of a single partition of up to 500GB of FAT32 or NTFS file systems. and ITS FREE!
