I don't quite understand what you're trying to do. are you going to run a website from it or something? I don't know what you're trying to do, but for you to get a static or permenant IP address you have to contact your ISP and tell them that you want to purchase one. Now, if you leave your DSL/cable modem on all the time then your IP address doesn't actually change and in essence you kinda have a static IP address. If you turn your modem off evey time you're done using the internet then you your modem will try to get a different IP address everytime. Tell me what it is you want to do, and I will tell you what to do.

I guess you need to make a static IP because your PS3 and UPnP networking aren't playing properly so you need to trigger or forward ports?

Anyway go to network settings / Internet Connection Settings / Wired or Wireless connection (depending on your type of conneciton) and you can follow the prompts to set it from there.  Use manual networking not DHCP.  You'll need to know your routers IP, and your ISPs DNS address(es).

You will need to make sure your have your router configured correctly for static IPs.  All of the port triggering or forwarding will also need to be configured on your router also.

I'm going to assume you know what you are doing with static IPs, and wont go in to any more depth.

To the 2 guys that posted above me... WOW, just wow!  I don't even know what to say about those posts.  The guy asked to set a static IP on his PS3, not on his internet connection.  As for illegal activities?  WTF?

You don't need static ip for that. I have my ps3 through a router and it was all done with DHCP. The router took care of everything :)

Plenty of people have issues with UPnP and PS3.  There have been many posts here about it.  If people have these NAT 3 type issues they need to make sure UPnP is enabled, if it is and it still doesn't work it is time to disable UPnP and try port triggering the PSN ports.  If port triggering doesn't work it is time to assign the PS3 a static IP and forward those ports.

I'm assuming the TC knows what he is doing as he is asking specific questions, and not asking which ports to forward.

If you don't know what you are doing you are going to find it very hard then.  It's time for you to get someone who knows what they are doing to come visit you or you have to sit down and read your routers manual.
The PS3 like all good devices uses UPnP port forwarding for networking, so on most decent routers you can just get online and all the correct ports are forwarded correctly.  When this doesn't work port triggering is the next option.  This basically means your router looks for something using that port and opens a conneciton from your firewall to that machine.  If that doesn't work you need to poke holes in your fire wall to your PS3 using a static IP and port forwarding.

The ports that need to be forwarded are:

TCP 80
TCP 443
TCP 5223
UDP 3478
UDP 3479
UDP 3658

The ports above are the PSN ports, some online games also require extra ports to be open.

TCP 9293
TCP 10070-10080
UDP 10070

Like I said if you don't know what any of this means there isn't much we can do to help you.

You are getting ahead of yourself. If you want help we need to start at the beginning.  How are you trying to connect your PS3 to the internet?  What router do you have?  Are you using wireless or wired networking?  Finally what issues are you having when you tried.

Answer these questions and there are plenty of people here that can help you figure out what is going on.

I work with Windows Server 2000/2003, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and to a lesser extent Sun's Solaris.  The company I work for is an IT reseller so I'm involved in the server side of it (I do work with PCs and workstations too - I manage 2 locations, but I stick to the server side myself).  Making sure our customers hardware/software works exactly as expected.  Nothing exciting really, it's a job that p!ss3s me off some of the time but gives me the money to afford to do what I want outside of work, and you can't really ask for more than that... well I guess you could, but let's not be greedy.  ;)

I have a Linksys BEFW-11S4 version 4. I've tried both wireless using the router as an access point and wired with an ethernet cable. I can get the IP address it's the internet connection that fails.

Just did a quick search and found a guide for enabling UPnP on that router.  So check out this link (microsoft.com).  Once UPnP is enabled everything else should just work using DHCP (no need for static IPs).

Let us know how you go.

if you have cable modem, and the modem was connected directly to any other machine, it won't let you connect. You need to reset the modem by unplugging the power. so connect ps to router, router to modem and plug power back to moden.

Well I have a cable modem, but there's just an ethernet cable that connects to the router and a cordial cable that connects to the wall.

Well my PS2 was connected for a while, but one day a couple years ago or so it just stopped working.

It says,

Set up your router in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and reset all defaults.

Does that mean I have to reset my router? Also I have to disconnect my internet to get the IP to the one that allows me to connect to the router's homepage, should I do that?

Easy. On the router, reserve an internalip for your ps3. I assume the ps3 will have a MAC address for you to use.

If you set it up right on the router, then to the outside world, it would seems like a static ip eventhough it is not.

I am so confused. We're trying to figure out how to change the NAT settings on our PS3 to open. When we do the internet settings check it comes up saying NAT: Type 2 but when my husband puts in Call of Duty 4 the lobby says his NAT settings are moderate. He also has an X-Box 360 hooked up in a different room and he plays XBL on it ALL the time, never had a problem with the NAT settings. WHAT the crap do we do? We want to change the settings for the PS3 to say open without screwing up the settings for the X-Box. We have the PS3 hooked up wirelessly and the X-Box hooked into the router. I am not computer savy or anything so can someone give me some step by step instructions on how to do this without screwing anything up? We've got two game consoles and 4 computers that use the router at any given time and we can't loose connection to the computers like at all because of college work we have to do. THANK YOU ahead of time for anyone who has any ideas. I can be reached by email or PS3 PS3: mandragorasky (or Phelios.Merc

First try UPnP (mine was a success doing only this) if nothing happens try setting up a DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) for your console. and lastly try port forwarding. Here's a link on how to get a NAT type 2 for your PS3 I hope this will help. :D
